That's a nice coincidence. I recently was finally able to find a new copy of the deleted
"One More Try: An Anthology" on ebay (and only for like 10 bucks) and it landed on my doormat today. Just finished replacing the front of the jewel case because it landed a bit to hard .

Thanks for posting this, had never heard that before.....

What can I say?...Imho, Johnny Winter is the John Popper of slide guitar...just waaaaaaay too many notes....His slide playing has always sounded like nothing more than a bunch of rehearsed licks thrown on top of whatever song....

I'm so glad he was not asked to join the band, would have ruined it.

I think I should get a silver star. I think this is about number 25 of nasty BigV musician put downs that I have not responded to. I say, if one is personally as good as who they put down, then criticism has real merit. So I guess I responded, darn.

Johnny Winter has slowed down, but he sure could do rock or blues either. Second Winter is one of my favorites for sure.

Johnny was one of the best in his hayday. I've seen him a few times the last 3 years and each time he seems to get stronger, will he ever be the same? no, but none of us elder statesmen are what we once were either.

I think in his prime, first and second Winter lps and Johnny Winter And, Johnny smokes it. He was fast, accurate and very tasty. I loved his slide playing back in the day and never thought he used too many notes. Just wish I could play some of his licks on any of three releases I mentioned

I don't know BigV's history of musician put downs, but in his defense, Johnny Winter is often too busy in his playing style for my tastes as well. I have a huge amount of respect for his talent and really enjoyed his work with Muddy Waters, where he tended to subdue his playing a bit. He certainly is one of the most well-versed players and someone who should continue to get the respect and accolades he has earned.

What possible difference could my opinion have on your feelings about a particular musician?

I think the guy plays way to many notes.

None at all, why would you think it might? Odd reasoning on your part. If I must spell it out, I think you are disrespectful of people that have paid their dues musically, and doubt you can play even half as well, or we all would have heard you by now, like we have ole Johnny, that's all. But I will be glad to explain my posts any time.

Not taking either side, but this reminds me of the scene in Amadeus when the King is telling Mozart that his compositions had too many notes. I love that scene.

Johnny does play a lot of notes and occasionally it clashes with other musicians or styles. He plays with all ten fingers though so there's bound to be a lot of notes flying from his guitar neck. It's not for everyone.

I dont have a problem with Winters slide at all. Sounds great on that version of Wasted Words.

He just has a different style.

Dickey....slower style
Johnny...faster style

Both of them...excellant!

Johnny Winter is a living legend, an American musical treasure and without a doubt one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Had he been born in England, he would have been refered to as God! Nuff said.

However, what I think that a lot of folks seem to miss about "Wasted Words" that One More Try illustrates quite clearly. From the liner notes it would appear that Gregg, Johnny, Jaimoe and Ron Carter are apparently "having a good time", wind up at a studio and just put this track down. Afterwards Berry Oakley puts a more rock version bass on the track. Now here's the important fact ... whether or not this is a Johnny Winter first take or not (one would assume it was due to the background info on this tune) ... Dickey Betts nicked it almost note-for-note. Nobody ever knew that fact until One More Try. Dickey Betts is one of the all time greats on guitar AND Slide, but it would appear that he learned an awful lot from Mr. Winter (certainly on "Wasted Words") as well as Brother Duane.

It's all about time frame folks ... the "Wasted Words" track lends a lot of creedence to the rumor that Johnny Winter was considered (heavily?) to join the band at the time preceeding Duane's death. The track also shows that it wouldn't have been such a bad idea as some would have you believe. Now had Johnny joined the band would the ABB have put out Brothers And Sisters? Probably not. But ... there probably wouldn't have been a "Pony Boy Blues" on that record either had it not been for Mr. Winter. Rock on Johnny!!!
