While listening to some YouTube Mule (When Doves Cry) with my wife on the couch, she says "You know that is a Prince song?"

Could have knocked me over ....

Just shows you that a good song is a good song, and is better in the hand of the Mule

It was in the movie Purple Rain, which was not that good a movie though the soundtrack was quite good.

That is a signature Prince tune, the one I associate with him more than any other; it is his "Stairway" or "Whippin Post."

I will have to hit youtube. I cannot even imagine what Mule would sound like doing this.

Here you go.
Mule usually does When Doves Cry then into Beautifully Broken.

Enjoy

If I remember the story, Priince started it by using parts of Beautifully Broken when he performed When Doves Cry. When Warren learned this, in an act of mutual respect, he started incorporating When Doves Cry into Beautifully Broken.

At least, that's how I heard it when the Mule first started doing that.

Nothing personal but "you couldn't be more hopelessly wrong." Just my opinion.

sorry thats just my opinion. all of the energy and funk is sucked out and instead the songs sounds like some long forgotten eagles tune without harmonies

Actually Prince has a lot of Killer material that a lot of people have never heard . Check out N.E.W.S. - it is an all instrumental cd with his take on jazz music from the North , East , West and South ...

Agree Matt , Prince has a catalog of music that a lot of people have never ever heard . Prince totally kicks ass , he is a awesome guitar player and musician and the best stuff is the stuff that is never played on the radio , true for about every artist as well...

i never heard that story but it would be cool. i know that george porter was the one who started the mule "beautifully broken > when doves cry > beautifully broken"

To the original poster: now that you've gone back (presumably) and listened to the Prince song, had you REALLY not heard that song? I'm floored by that one.

When Warren does it there is a dramatic buildup because when he says "this is what it sounds like when doves cry" he goes into a great guitar solo.

I'm not saying Prince can't play the guitar, I'm just saying Warren won't stomp his feet like a child looking for attention and tell the crowd "I am here, look at me"

Great song and great soundtrack. I like all of Prince's early work, maybe the first five or six albums.

Mule isn't a funk band and do their own interpretation and considering what song it is infused with I think they did a perfect job with it. I love both versions???

Why in the world would Warren and Mule ever play the same version as Prince anyway???

Truth. And the Mule should break out Prince's "Kiss"! I saw a dude sing this karaoke and it was hilarious.

I like his early work as well, saw him twice in the early days (Dirty mind/Controversy) era, great shows. And he is a great musician. Kind of lost me beginning with the Around the World in a Day Album. But he has had some good tunes since. His solo during While My Guitar Gently Weeps was smoking.

But yes , as I said earlier I like both versions of When Doves Cry. I personally would not expect Warren /Mule to be doing a “funky” version. I think Warren is one of the best when it comes to doing covers. One of my favorites that he does is Otis Redding’s Loviing you too Long, man that was awesome.

Tom Jones does a great version of Kiss! I just recently saw a video of him doing Mama Told Me Not To Come with The Stereophonics. That man still has an incredible voice.
