...would this whole thing be this "huge" if it were not for everyone involved in the media? Every major outlet has this on their main webpage. Drudge has no less than six links to it, hell, all the aggregators are linking the hell out of this story.

Just, odd.

I know this is how things are, but, damn.

Prolly three or so ways of looking at it:

If you think he's a nutcase, then why give him the attention...

or...

You don't think he's a nutcase and he deserves the attention...

or...

you could care less.

This thing I must admit is baffling me to the extent that the entire media is going.

i actually think this is a good idea ... so long as the Islamic/Arabic media across the world are fair in their coverage. because it looks that while this one church is burning the quran, there is an overwhelming response by students and other local and national religious groups that are opposed to it.

like it or not, this is America. while this is not a perfect analogy in terms of objective and mission, just as Park 51 should move forward, so should this book burning. freedom principles and rights should be extended to idiots as well.

Talk about your 15 mins of fame - this church has something like 50 members.

They still handle snakes and drink strychnine around these parts...

That's real good way to get a handful of fatwas issued, too.

I realize all that. However, there is not an equivalence, IMO. What can be done vs. the right to do it are different things. Guy wants to burn the books, he can burn the books. I'm speaking more to the attention it's getting.

There's a lot of passive support for the burning, using the "the Muslims do X, Y and Z in their countries, why can't we, etc., etc., etc."

I had always thought that if you believe that your way of doing something is better, you don't get your message across by mimicing the actions of those which you hold in disdain.

x2. well said.

the problem with this pastor is that this book burning is the complete antithesis of what his Bible commands him to do. The Bible commands believers to pray for their enemies, judge not, to love they neighbor and the turn the other cheek. nothing in the New Testament supports what this "pastor" is preaching.

This does not surprise me. Westboro was the first thing I thought of when I heard the news reports on these Quran burners. I also think that if Bible's were being burned this same group of bigots would be outraged and highly offended. But their minds are too closed to see any parallels here. It saddens and offends me when these self-proclaimed 'Christian' groups use acts of 'restrained violence' to get their message out - in the name of God or Jesus Christ? I don't think so. It's an afront to Christians and/or anyone who believes in God (or whatever one calls their higher power). Dove World Outreach ... New Testament Church? More like the Church of Potential Jerry Springer Guests. And I agree, Jerry ... if the media didn't pay people like this so much attention their power would slip away and their message would go unheard by the masses.

Anyone burning someone else's Holy book are gonna have some bad Karma coming their way IMO. It is no different than burning their own Holy Bibles. I hope all of the decent Muslim people around the world realize what a small minority of morons are taking part in this scumbag action.

It's the media making it known everywhere, todays media is as much to blame as anyone else for some of the things that happen.

Maybe they can burn Nancy Grace at the stake.

Ann Coulter also.......

With all the controversy surrounding his proposed Quran burning on the anniversary of 9/11, Dove World Outreach founder, Terry Jones has a new problem The lender for the funding of his church is reportedly calling in the loan.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/dailybeast/20100908/ts_dailybeast/ 9799_terryjonespastorwhowanttoburnqurans

"For now, Jones with television crews from around the world seeking his presence, he may be living his dream. But like the slogan says, everything dies. The church’s lender has reportedly called in its loan. The Dove World Outreach Church campus is on the market for $2.9 million, reduced $1.1 million “for quick sale.”

Remarks: The article discusses Mr. Jones being reportedly evicted from his former church in Cologne, Germany under allegations of having taken money from the church for his own use, and that there were Muslims in Germany whom he was concerned were going to take over the area. That is when his first mistrust and feelings against Islam began. If this is the case, then what we are seeing is not a new over-reaction to Islam as some think.

He is also accused of having asked current parishoners to give up their belongings and work for the church. (I won't say it is equivalent, but Jim Jones asked his followers to do this also).

As to his alleged mis-appropriation of church funds for his own personal use, while we all agree that is wrong, I don't think it is all that uncommon for people in the clergy, who may need a loan and not have regular collateral to use to get one from conventional sources to borrow from their church and return it later. If he never planned to return it, that is something else entirely, which as a preacher I think would not be possible (breaking the 'thou shalt not steal' command is not something a pastor would knowingly do).

Mr. Jones believes he is doing the right thing. I think it would be better for him to take his concerns to Muslim scholars and discuss the theological differences with them before taking actions which have been condemned by almost everyone who has heard about it.

What we will be called to account for is why we allowed him to burn the Qurans. Especially when he has announced this event well in advance and actually called for people to do this on an international basis. If we protect every religions freedoms, how do we sit back and allow it? What do we say to the international community?

The media should report this story, and hopefully the reactions to it. If the President and Gen Petraeus weigh in on a topic, it is newsworthy. Now, if Lindsay Lohan news were the topic of discussion, I might say something different.

What if Lindsay Lohan weighs in on this story?

Then she'd be on her way to becoming a woman of substance, as opposed to a mere consumer of them!

We tell them the same thing we would anyone else. Although it may be a bitter pill to swallow this guy/group has a constitutional right of freedom of speech, religion, etc. We tell them that the constitution applies to all not just those whom the majority may support. Then we tell them that they should be more tolerant…….
