Electric Hot Tuna will celebrate founding guitarist Jorma Kaukonen’s 70th birthday with shows at New York’s Beacon Theater on December 3 and 4. According to Hot Tuna, “The band plans to rock the show with songs that span Jorma’s entire career. We also plan to invite friends old and new to join us in celebrating this special event.” In addition to his work with Hot Tuna, Jorma is a co-founder of Jefferson Airplane and an accomplished solo artist.

This should be wonderful (and what a nice way to celebrate Jorma's birthday ... with him!) Whew ... hard getting my mind around 70, though. That would mean I'm .... oh, never mind.

(am I the only one who feels so much younger than what I perveived my parents to be at the same age?)

Hot Tuna has confirmed the first round of guests confirmed for Jorma Kaukonen’s two-day 70th birthday celebration. As previously reported, the guest-heavy Hit Tuna shows will take place at New York’s Beacon Theatre on December 3 and 4. The first round of confirmed guests include: Chris Smither, John Hammond, Larry Campbell and Bruce Hornsby. Several other acts will join the event’s lineup in the coming weeks. Hiot Tuna will release its first studio album in 20 years in 2011.

Should be an awesome vibe. I caught the guys on Thanksgiving weekend 2006 at the Beacon and that was memorable, this will go way beyond that. I'll be at the Saturday night show and am looking forward to whoever is there. According to Jorma's website both shows are sold out. They also added a few more names to the list. Former Tuna keyboard player Pete Sears, guitarist Happy Traum, singer Teresa Williams and Nashville bass player Byron House will be on hand. Master of the Telecaster Bill Kirchen will also add his talents, he and Jorma together should be interesting. Too bad David Bromberg has shows that weekend. Saw him with Jorma in January and those two still make magic together after all these years. It's cool that Michael Falzarano is supposed to be helping coordinate the guests. The 90's version of Tuna featuring him, Sears and Harvey Sorgen on drums was one of my favorite editions of the band. I'd really love to see a Jack and Jorma spot with just those two doin' their thing.
The countdown begins...

I have a few extras for these shows if anyone is interested. I have two for Friday and one for Saturday. I'll dig up the link for the the Fridays in a second, and I'll have to check on the seat location for the Saturday with friend.

I tried to buy tickets through the Fur Peace site for one of these shows. Jorma's wife emailed me, but she wouldn't say where in the Lodge the seats were, so I didn't bite.

"Tapers???"

although not impossible, Jorma has a fairly firm policy against taping of Tuna shows

I'll be there both nights

I am going Friday night. I hope Warren shows up at one of the shows just to say hi.

And since they are celebrating the history of Jorma's career, I hope that they do some of the heavy stuff from their great 70's albums which I haven't heard too much of recently. And finally with Pete Sears there I would LOVE to hear Ice Age which is probably my all time favorite Jorma composition but which they don't seem to do without the keyboards anymore.

Saturday was everything I coulda hoped for both in song choices and guests. Jorma and Jack were in fine form and the vibe was special. Special guest Oteil and Casady combined with drummers Skoota Warner and Bob Steeler to form a monster rhythm machine on several songs, especially "Funky #7," "Bowlegged Women" and "99 Year Blues." Michael Falzarano(gtr) and Pete Sears(keys) who were members of the 90's version of Hot Tuna both added strong contributions throughout the night. Sears' keyboards and Accordian in particular helped raise the level of performance. Steve Earle's two song set pushed the proceedings to the heights. Bob Weir popped in and out during both sets. He and Falzarano combined on vocals for "Big Railroad Blues" which was my first highlight of the evening. "When I Paint My Masterpiece" with lead vocals by Weir was another. Sorry I missed Friday with Warren, I hope to hear from someone who was there.

Warren did a lot more than show up to say high. He jammed out on four separate songs. The two shows together were very special and I hope they are planning to release the sound boards because it would be a shame to not hear these again.
