Rainbow's "Rising" sure is great. I have mellowed on metal and have gotten away from reading a lot of fantasy, but 25 years ago I was rather different.

Now I prefer the grit of Dylan or The Band. However, I can still listen to just about anything Ritchie Blackmore did from the 60s through the 90s.

late 70s/early 80s metal produced some rock n roll alltime classics:

UFO - Lights Out, Strangers in the Night
Black Sabbath - Heaven & Hell, Mob Rules
Ozzy - Blizzard of Ozz, Diary of a Madman
Judas Priest - Unleashed in the East, British Steel, Screaming for Vengeance
Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast, Peace of Mind
AC/DC - If You Want Blood, Highway to Hell, Back in Black, For Those About To Rock
Scorpions - Lovedrive, Blackout
Dio - Holy Diver

+ others I consider "hard rock" were putting out great heavy music - Van Halen, Whitesnake, Deep Purple reunion, Rainbow, Rush still rocked hard 1978-1981 timeframe, lots more...

I would have to second Rainbow's "Rising."

But, my fave heavy metal album would have to be "Basket Of Light" by Pentangle.

....kidding. My true and real fave metal album is Suicidal Tendencies' "How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today." Smoking from beginning to end, and with some punk attitude thrown in to boot.

A few vinyl albums that I've had to replace recently for one reason or another, and they've been in that stack right next to the turntable:

Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
Judas Priest -- these all came on 180 gram vinyl* -- British Steel, Hell Bent for Leather, Sad Wings of Destiny and Rocka Rolla. My favorite, which I've not had to replace, is Sin After Sin: an absolutely GREAT Heavy Metal Album! Add to that Stained Class, etc. etc. I may have every album they've put out; They are my favorite Metal band.

The old Sabbath catalog has held up perfectly well - essentially every one, but 1 through Heaven and Hell are the best.

Another great one of which I found a new copy is Tygers of Pan Tang - Spellbound .... fantastic album.

UFO, Iron Maiden, Saxon, Def Leppard's first two albums, Scorpions up through Blackout........

(and it feels too nice out on the porch to go in and look at the records - I'm probably forgetting a few)
.............................

* for the audiophiles - the Priest vinyl reissues of the old catalog are *good* - but I have not been knocked-out by superior sound character or mix - The old originals sound just as good if not better, IMO. One exception: the Rocka Rolla reissue (with a couple extra songs) IS a better sounding record than the original, IMO.

This is not meant to be a slight to anyone. I have loads of friends who
are metal-heads. They seem to miss a lot of the ground breakers of
the genre. I realize there my be conjecture but bands like Montrose, Deep Purple
Black Sabbath, etc ... were really the forerunners of current day metal bands.
I like them all.
