Hear WXPN's Playlist Of Songs For East Coast Road Trips

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=129237684&sc=fb&am p;cc=fp

August 20, 2010 What better way to celebrate the start of a $1.4 billion highway project than with a classic mix of road songs? Weekend Edition's news series "I-95: The Road Most Traveled" will explore the social, cultural, economic and environmental impact of the I-95 highway renovation project. We're taking care of the soundtrack.
This mix was chosen from a work in progress at Philadelphia's WXPN: the 885 Ultimate Road Trip Songs Countdown. Listeners have been asked to submit their Top 10 road-trip songs for a countdown this October, and these songs were selected from the thousands that have already been submitted.
From Ray Charles and Bruce Springsteen to The Beach Boys and Richard Thompson, these 95 songs are sure to make the long trip more tolerable. It's full of classics that sound even better when you're stuck in traffic. You can even listen in your car via the NPR Music iPhone app just select "Streams" at the top of the "Rock/Pop/Folk" channel.
Whether you're driving on I-95 or traveling your own personal highway, enjoy the mix of music and stories from "I-95: The Road Most Traveled."

But how do you omit Little Feat's "Let it roll"?....For goodness sakes, the opening verse mentions Highway 95!

Rollin' Down Highway 95
Sailin' Through Her Hometown Countryside
Move On Over Stand Astride
My Cruise Control's in Overdrive
Need to Take My Baby For a Ride

The Doors, L.A. Woman has to be on the list. That and Radar Love are just about the best driving songs ever. Also, Taj Mahal's version of Six Days On The Road.

How 'bout "Easy Rider" by Jimi Hendrix or "Highway 61" by Johnny Winter? I certainly enjoy speeding to those songs. BTW, Dickey Betts plays a KILLER solo on that "Travelin' Shoes" song by Elvin Bishop! I love that song!

Yep !

And on Highway 61, it has to be Winter's and Dylan's...

Here is a criminal omission:

Robert Johnson- Terraplane Blues.

I know. He 's Blues but IMO, he was a rocker before his time ...

that was I was thinking when I saw it listed as well..... & it's 1 of my favorite R.E.M. songs

BTW when NPR played the segment this morning, the music they played at the end was the flute solo of MTB"s "Take The Highway", another song not mentioned in the 95 songs

Little Feat -Willin
Joni Mitchell - Coyote
Ike Turner - Rocket 88
Ten Years After - Goin' Home
The Band - The Weight
Janis Joplin (Kris Kristofferson) - Me and Bobby McGee
Rolling Stones - Moonlight Mile
Rickie Lee Jones - Woody and Dutch on the Slow Train to Peking
Led Zeppelin - Ramble On
Sammy Hagar - I Can't Drive 55
Bob Seger - Roll Me Away
Van Morrison - Into the Mystic (I know you said 'driving' but sometimes ... late at night )

and of course The Wiggles - Big Red Car

There's always George Thorogood's Gear Jammer

Running my rig around 95,
Rockin' and rollin' in overdrive
My heart's beating like a jackhammer,
It's the midnight ride for the gear jammer
