For me besides bands like the ABB, Mule, DTB, the Dead it's older R&B and soul groups

An example is

Wilson Pickett-In the Midnight Hour

Any Beatles or Beach Boys, esp the earlier stuff.

And anything that involves Derek Trucks picking up a guitar!

Grateful Dead is comfort food music for me, and singing along to Box of Rain never fails to make me feel good. Also high on that list are Europe '72 and Wake of the Flood, Unbroken Chain from Mars Hotel, and Garcia's first solo album.

The Beatles and the Ramones do the job as well.

If I'm REALLY down, it's ABB and the mean old Blues to tap into that dark mood.

Other than that, hit me with Bob Marley and the Wailers.

Gregg Allman's voice always cheers me up. Gregg's music got me through some tough times.
I listen to "One More Try" - Gregg's Anthology, every Sunday.
The best rock album of all time is, "Laid Back". I may be just a little prejudiced.

Lot's of songs that cheer me ... too many to mention (or remember at this moment - although I'll recognize them and feel the smile when I hear them next ) I could fill pages with this answer but I'll make it a short story instead of a novel. A few...

Chelsea Morning by Joni Mitchell ... because it hits so well on the potential that can be present in each new day. And in the Joni vein - Carey ... because it represents a sort of freedom in living, reminds me a little of my youth, and those evenings spent in the Mermaid Cafe sound familiar (and fun).

Sloop John B by Beach Boys ... because it's about one of those trips that are so bad you just have to laugh ... and the vocals ... wow. And since I've mentioned Beach Boys I'll throw God Only Knows because I've been in love and the way this tune perfectly represents the way love can feel. And the vocals.

Waiting on a Friend by the Stones ... because a smile CAN relieve a heart that grieves and Sonny Rollins CAN play a sax.

Ripple by Grateful Dead because I love the idea of ''Let there be songs to fill the air.' (and every other thought expressed in these lyrics and in this tune). Many (many) GD songs that could be inserted here but I'll limit myself to 2 more ... Sugar Magnolia that goes where the wind goes and Eyes of the World that carries the reminder that we are all the song that the morning brings (pretty strong argument for waking up!) and the tune.

Rickie Lee Jones Danny's All Star Joint where the vice is nice and the juke box goes doyt-doyt. Love Rickie's skat.

Paul Simon amuses me with a lot of his tunes but I'll end with Bob Dylan - couldn't answer a question like this without him. Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat for it's rocking tune and because I grew up in a time when Pill Box hats were quite fashionable. And Tambourine Man because I have danced beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free. And it was wonderful.

I was going to add The Meters, the early instrumentals in particular. Definite mood enhancing qualities.

Ridin' home from the beach, sticky hair from the salt water and sand in my britches, the Beach Boys cranked up.

The epitome of summer for me and all things joyous.
