Doobie Brothers - New Year's Eve, the Forum, Los Angeles, California, December 31st 1978, SBD.

This show was broadcast on KMET FM, 94.7

Two CDR audio discs

WAV

Sound quality good, fat signal, loud and clear, but there is a very slight tape wobble in a few places, one song cut off near end, and that Poseidon Adventure arena reverb wash, but hey, it's the Forum. It certainly did not seem to bother this crowd any.

Disc One :

1. Jesus Is Just Alright > (2 seconds FM noise) 1 second glitch 40 or so seconds in.
2. Long Train Running >
3. Sweet Maxine
4. It Keeps You Running >
5. Take Me In Your Arms
6. Clear As The Driven Snow
7. Little Darlin' I Love You

Disc Two :

1. Happy New Year Countdown/Auld Lang Syne
2. Echoes of Love
3. Neal's Fandango
4. What A Fool Believes (cut at the very end, argh!)
5. Disciple (jump in at the very beginning)
6. Don't Stop to Watch the Wheels Go 'Round
7. Black Water
8. Steamer Lane Breakdown
9. China Grove > Road Angel >
10. Daughter Of The Sea > China Grove

This is a rockin and explosive show from one of the top alltime goodtime all-American bands of the '70's! This performance shines. This recording captures the crackling energy and sheer exuberance of the Doobie Brothers live.

The Doobies' line-up at this time was a jaw-dropping powerhouse of talent, featuring Patrick Simmons on guitar, flute, banjo, and vocals; Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (formerly of Steely Dan) on guitar; and Michael McDonald (also from Steely Dan) on keyboards and vocals, whose song "What A Fool Believes," co-written with Kenny Loggins, soared to the top of the charts and won the Doobies their second #1 single, and a Grammy for McDonald. Performed here, it was not even on vinyl yet. Sadly the tape runs out, but not before we get to hear most of the song, over four minutes of goodness.

My personal favorite is "Neal's Fandango,"
an ode to Neal Casady, Jack Kerouac, the
mountains of Santa Cruz... It flies.

Since I don't have dual layer or anything fancy, I was faced with the problem of where to break up the gig for two discs. I chose to start disc 2 with the New Year's countdown, makes it a fun number to throw on for a New Year's party countdown, y'know? And a party record this is indeed, you can feel the rush all the way from 1978.

Enjoy! Scotty

KEEP ON LOOKIN TO THE EAST!

(Note: On disc #1 you will hear Patrick invite the audience to "take a toke off your doobie." For those of you unfamiliar with American counterculture slang of yesteryear, "doobie" reefered to a hand-rolled hemp cigarette, also known as a "joint," "number," "bone," "reefer," or several other silly names. A "toke" was the act of inhaling the smoke from this cigarette. Why anyone would name a band after a questionable cigarette is beyond me, but hey, "some cats just swing that way"!)

OK TO START OVERSEAS!
