Arrest warrant issued for Michael Jackson
Pop singer faces one count of child molestation
Wednesday, November 19, 2003 Posted: 12:58 PM EST (1758 GMT)

LOS OLIVOS, California (CNN) -- Authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Michael Jackson on one count of child molestation, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department told CNN Wednesday.

Jackson's Neverland Ranch in Santa Barbara, California, was searched Tuesday as part of the investigation.

Detective Tim Gracey with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department said authorities are working to determine Jackson's whereabouts and bring him into custody.

Jackson's spokesman Stuart Backerman said the singer has been in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the past two-and-a-half weeks, shooting a video for the song "One More Chance." That single is on his "Number Ones" album, a greatest-hits collection released Tuesday by Epic Records.

Backerman said he did not know what the investigation was about, and promised Jackson, 45, will "cooperate fully with authorities."

About 70 officials from the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department and the district attorney's office searched the home, known as Neverland Ranch, for about 10 hours. There was no official word on what they were searching for or may have found.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department and the district attorney will hold a news conference Wednesday at 11 a.m. (2 p.m. EST).

Later this month, a special on Jackson is set to be broadcast on CBS.

According to Backerman, Jackson said: "I've seen lawyers who do not represent me and spokespeople who do not know me speaking for me. These characters always seem to surface with a dreadful allegation just as another project, an album, a video, is being released."

The allegations come almost a decade after Jackson settled a lawsuit filed on behalf of a boy who had slept over at Neverland Ranch when he was 13 and accused Jackson of molesting him. No criminal charges were filed in that case.

Attorney Larry R. Feldman, who represented the alleged victim in the 1993 child molestation lawsuit against Jackson, told CNN on Tuesday that he would "not confirm or deny" that he is representing anyone in a civil or criminal investigation pertaining to Jackson because of possible "violation of attorney-client privilege."

Brian Oxman, an attorney for the Jackson family, said on CNN's "Larry King Live" that he believes the investigation stems from someone else seeking financial gain from Jackson.

"It is a case of excitement and hysteria because we have the same accusations that we had 10 years ago," he said. "It's like playing the playoffs all over again."

Johnnie Cochran, Jackson's attorney in the case 10 years ago, said it's odd the search warrant was served the day the singer's latest album was released.

"I think it's more than coincidence. I think it was planned," he said on "Larry King Live."

Cochran said he's tried to counsel Jackson "not to ever put yourself in that position" of being alone with young children.

"But that's who Michael Jackson is, he's a very, very naive person in many respects, and there's no question about that. Yeah, he does wear a bull's eye," Cochran said.

Backerman criticized what he called "the malignant horde of media hounds claiming to speak for Michael on this and many other issues.

"A rogues' gallery of hucksters and self-styled 'inside sources' have dominated the airwaves since reports of a search of Neverland broke, speculating, guessing and fabricating information about an investigation they couldn't possibly know about," he said.

Terms of the settlement of the lawsuit -- filed in 1993 and settled in '94 -- were confidential, though the boy's attorney -- Feldman -- said at the time they were happy to resolve the matter.

Cochran said at the time that Jackson maintained his innocence and that the settlement was in no way an admission of guilt.

Criminal investigators stopped pursuing their case after the lawsuit was settled and the young boy -- by then 14 -- made clear he did not want to participate in any prosecution of the singer.

CNN correspondents Frank Buckley and Charles Feldman and producer Stan Wilson contributed to this report.

I have to wonder why any parent would let this guy anywhere near their kid without direct supervision. Yes, I might, (not anymore) have taken advantage of an offer for my kid to have fun at The Neverland Ranch, but I would never allow MJ anywhere near him without my being there. I almost think, as sick as it may seem, that some parents set up their children in the hope of a large financial settlement from MJ. Never mind that the kid(s) has to live with the memory of this forever. California should pass a new subdivision to the Child Endangerment Law that says any parent who leaves their kid alone with MJ for any reason is committing Endangerment of a Child and make it a Felony. They can call it the Neverland Law.
Be safe,
John

NYCscammer that thought has crossed my mind too.....

but this whole thing seems particuarlly suspect since it is exactly on the day his new album comes out (greatest hits album). pretty big coincidence.

its a shame that all his personal stuff is beginning to overshadow his accomplishments.

We've been down this road before.

Mr. Jackson bought his way out before.

I would be surprised if he can't buy his way out again.

What a freak.

Peace
John

Since Johnny "I got OJ off" Cochran is one of his lawyers, you know this line will resurface in any defense strategy:

To hell with this pederass piece of garbage. In that TV interview less than a year ago he admitted that he thought it was alright for a 44 year old man to sleep in the same bed as a boy as an act of giving. Be a grown person and go hump some priest in the a$$ and leave the kids alone. Or move to Boston and marry Liza's ex, what the hell.

And it goes back to those parents that took the 20 million bucks in exchange for their kid sleeping with this gay plastic headed Romper Room rump ranger.

Jail time. And then maybe Bubba will drill him like a dry wall screw into a Ken doll.

To quote the late, great Frank Zappa:

"Eddie, are you kidding?"

Too funny.

I'd like MJ to share a cell with the guy who sent little Jeffrey Dahmer to his final destination.

People have been saying this guy is a pedophile for something like ten years, since he got charged the first time and settled for big money out of court. So when he gets arrested the SECOND time, it's a big news story.

Somewhere between the grotesque and the unsurprising lies the Michael Jackson zone.

Marley, I don't believe MJ was arrested in the first incident. I believe there was a criminal investigation, but after the payoff the kid and his family got real quiet (in my opinion) and without the evidence no charges were brought. It sounds like this time an arrest will be made.

Prison!? Are you kidding? Rich freaks don't go to prison!!! Not prison as we imagine it, anyway. Maybe he'll wind up in an airforce base/country club type lockup with a former priest who happens to be a more dominate freak. Wouldn't that be a "Thriller"?

This guy should have been in therapy long ago. He's obviously got a thing for boys, but since he's rich, he's still a celebrity. I feel sorry for those freaky looking kids of his, he shouldn't have been allowed to father any children. If he gets charged, then his lawyers will bring out the "poor Michael story", how he was whipped, etc. blah, blah. All the guy needed to do was grow up and act like a man, it ain't always easy but its what you gotta do dammit.

It IS true he's had a warped life from the beginning. But if he's a pedophile, it's not as simple as 'grow up and act like a man.'

Do you send him to a womens prison or a mans? He'll want a juvinile detention hall for sure. Will he be considered a minority or white in prison? Will he get to keep his gloves and noses? Can he bring toys to prison? Will he have them inmates all doing the dance scene from Beat It? Will the new fashion in prison shift from cellblock tattoos to cellblock cosmetic surgery? This all will be an interesting sidebar in itself....
