Last night in Red Bank, Derek played the Strat once owned by Duane who later gave it to Delaney Bramlett. He played it during "Coming Home" of course. The gentleman sitting next to me gave me the info when Derek walked out with it and i said "he's playing a strat?"
And sure enough after the song Susan mentioned the significance of the guitar..
He said some guy owns it who lives in the Red Bank area. Anyone have info how it
wound up in NJ?? Here's a photo of it with Derek backstage i found when i googled it..

Very cool. Derek has played Duane's Goldtop Les Paul and now the '61 Strat. I wonder if he'll ever get the opportunity to play the '61 SG/Les Paul and the cherry sunburst or tobacco sunburst Les Pauls?

Rob

That was Charlie O's guitar. I think he was around when I introduced you to the crew. He was sitting right in front of us. He went backstage at intermission, and Derek told him that it still has a lot of juice! I took a bunch of pix of him w/the guitar - will post later.

Nice meeting you, your wife and friend. I saw her in the ladies room and she points and says "bagpiper".....and don't listen to bluedad - John is just really really jealous that he won't be here for this one!

GREAT SHOW KIDS!

But, you know, this isn't the Strat he used at Fame, is it? Didn't that one have a black pick guard?

Could it be the Strat Dickey was playing in this photo? Dickey could have been borrowing it from Duane...

I think there were several 'strats' used by Duane. The one at Fame was the one with the Tele neck, right?

I agree, there was probably a few he used over those years - I swear there's a photo "at the tip of my tongue", a studio shot, where Duane is playing one with a white pickguard.

there's this from a blog:
quote:

Duane’s 50’s 1956 sunburst Stratocaster is at the London Hard Rock Café vault. Another Stratocaster is at the Hard Rock in Florida, if I recall. He played Stratocasters while a session player at Muscle Shoals. If you listen to” Goin Down Slow” off of the Duane Allman Anthology album, you will hear his Stratocaster tones. Tone is in the fingers and the trademark licks are there in full force. He is mostly associated with the Les Paul, and these session recordings prove that he played and sounded remarkably the same on any guitar.

His Tele with the Strat neck from the Hourglass days was stolen, and the whereabouts of his Gibson ES-335 is unknown. He played this guitar before the Hourglass, probably in the Allman Joys.

He is pictured at Muscle Shoals on a post-CBS sunburst Stratocaster with a rosewood neck and black plastic, but I have never read anything about that guitar.

He gave a 1961 Sunburst Stratocaster to Delany Bramlett, which I recall is still owned by Delany.

By the way, very cool that Derek got to play it -- Love the quote, "... it's still a lot of juice" ... Classic.

No, Brent, I think you're thinking of the Tele he played with the Strat neck during the Hourglass days.

The 61' Strat sounded unbelievable last night. But IMO, Derek could take a
broomstick and put strings on it and it would sound great!!!

It was kind of fun knowing Derek was going to do that ahead of time.
Charlie O was nice enough to bring the guitar into Jamian's for all to check out before the show.
He could have just left it back stage but he said he thought we would all enjoy seeing it.
Thanks, Charlie O.
Ed, always a pleasure seeing you and your wonderful family. You are blessed, brother.
Nice to see Alan and Bert again.
Great meeting everyone else too.
BTW, I'm pretty sure Charlie O said he got/purchased the Strat from Delaney and has papers to prove.

Al, you are a good friend.
Just got home from the trip to Redbank.
Thanks for writing about the Strat

I got video of 2 songs, and some great shots. Will try to get them loaded later and posted for ya'll.

The crowd dug the hell out of the show - and clearly the whole band responded to us the audience. I have never seen Derek show so much expression - it was a wonderful night. More later

Charlie said that, unfortunately, Delaney had to sell it and a number of other items to pay medical bills. Which is an absolute crime.

absnj is the exact opposite of Bob Uecker - "I must be in the front row!"
