What I like about the way the ABB does the drum section is that it's based on a groove and playing off the groove and not so much about Drum calisthenics...

JaBuMa is musical it's not an exercise in drum theory. Mody Dick...Toad...yuck...drum exercises...

not even close to listenable unless you're drummer....no groove...not musical...just a bunch of flailing...but to each his own....Mtn Jam EAP...my first experience with a drum section I could follow like a song.

If a gun was held to my head, I'd probably have to say,

Jim Gordon's solo on the live Derek & The Dominos "Let It Rain".

...followed closely by Butch & Jaimoe's short little bit at toward the end of the LAFE version of "Liz Reed". And, of course, their spot in "Mountain Jam".

Ringo's bit on "The End" from Abbey Road is dear to my heart, as well.

And, {cowers} I do like Ginger Baker's solo on Blind Faith's "Do What You Like". (but not so much on "Toad")

Can somebody point me to a hot Kreutzman/Hart bit on a Grateful Dead album? I've got "The Other One" on Skeletons & Roses, but I'm not all that impressed with it.

Whatever Neil Peart is doing currently. He's always had the best drum solo, but he makes it just a little bit better on each tour.

A good one is Elvin Jones at the beginning of ''Pursuance'' from A Love Supreme.

YOUR favorite drum solo..

No such animal.....good drumming is one thing and can be a major part of any tune, but I can do without any drum solo longer than 20-30- seconds.........

For variety's sake, I'll go with Zakir Hussain from Ravi Shankar's Concert for World Peace.

Zakir is often considered the best tabla player on Earth, and some of the thing he does during his extended showcase on this DVD are nothing short of mind-boggling. The variety of tones he gets from the drums, the amazing dexterity and speed of his hands--they are literally a blur for parts of the solo.

Just like a great Duane Allman or Jimi Hendrix guitar solo can make a guitarist want to throw their axes away in despair, as a percussionist, this solo reminds me how far I have to go.

Hmm tough one. I usually appreciate a drum solo only for the chance to hit the can and get a beer. Way too self indulgent for this kid.

Indeed !!! The spot towards the end of the show that the ABB use for a drum solo is terrible too. I prefer no drum solo, little 30 sec jobs incorporated into a tune are ok, as long as there aren't too many.

My sentimental favorite is Louie Bellson. A sweet man, nice to everyone he met, and the precision of his snare work was second to none.

But nobody has ever or will ever touch Buddy.

Here's a great piece with both of them and the Tonight Show band...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CR8dAmTbBMw

Given how Johnny loved drummers, he must have been in orbit this night. Louie sitting in for Ed Shaughnessy (no slouch either), and Buddy as a guest, with both putting on a show. Hard to imagine this was once regular late night TV when compared to the dreck that's on now.

Ok, it's not a solo but rather a drum dual - but this almost makes it worth going to see Godsmack:

Jaimoe + Butch + Marc

but since that may not count as a "solo" performance i concur with those who opted
for Rush's Neil Peart !!!
