Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood @ Wembley Arena, London, 21 May 2010.

Last night I was privileged to witness what is possibly one of the best concerts that I have ever attended – yes – it was that good. A lot of people have said that Eric Clapton is at his best when driven by the presence of other high calibre musicians, John Mayall, Jack Bruce, Duane Allman, Jeff Beck and of course Derek Trucks have all played with Eric and raised his game. When it comes to Steve Winwood however, it is not just his multi-talented musical ability but also an obvious love of the same musical roots that provides the chemistry that bonds Eric and him together. Their friendship goes back a long way, and seeing them together on stage it is obvious that they are two friends playing together for the shear enjoyment of it, which results in a wondrous performance to be enjoyed by all the fans lucky enough to be in attendance.

Perhaps to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Hendrix passing, the set list included Voodoo Chile, and it was undoubtedly the song of the night. Eric just closed his eyes and played with such feeling that you were left wondering whether his friend Jimi was there within him providing the inspiration. Also, although the tour is not billed as a Blind Faith faith re-union, I very much enjoyed the fact that they played the entire A side of the Blind Faith album, it has always been one of my favourites and one I still spin on a regular basis to this day. The set also included a few acoustic numbers, including the unplugged version of Layla, and although missing the magical touches that Duane brought to the song, this version brings home the heartfelt love that was behind Eric’s writing of the lyrics. During this portion of the set, my wife Jan commented that from our seats in row 3, dead centre, with Eric and Steve just out of arms reach, it was almost like having them playing in your living room – I think she might have invited them back for coffee if she had the opportunity!

The set list included songs from Steve's career with Spencer Davis and Traffic as well as his solo works, mixed with some songs from Eric's extensive catalogue, and a few of their personal favourite old blues songs thrown in for very good measure. The two hours and twenty minutes show was finally brought to a close with the encore, "Dear Mr. Fantasy", after which the house lights went on and the crowd reluctantly made their way out of the auditorium, they would happily have had Eric and Steve play all night. If you get the opportunity to see these guys playing together, do not miss it, mortgage the house if you have to!!!

Set List:
01. Had To Cry Today
02. Low Down
03. After Midnight > Presence Of The Lord
04. The Shape I'm In
05. Glad > Well Alright
06. Tough Luck Blues
07. Pearly Queen
08. Forever Man
09. Midland Maniac
10. Going Down
11. Georgia
12. Drifting Blues
13. How Long
14. Layla
15. Can't Find My Way Home
16. Split Decision
17. Voodoo Chile
18. Cocaine
19. Dear Mr. Fantasy (encore)

Cool review !!! Looking forward to tomorrow's show in Antwerp, Belgium.
We have a nice hotel in Antwerp so we will be there early for some Belgium brewskies
and to enjoy the nightlife post gig.

Setlist appears identical to the Birmingham show earlier this week.

We saw the 1st shows at MSG last year. It was every bit as outstanding as the review says. A show that I'd have to admit was better in the same vein was Cream at MSG which was mystical because of the complete history and the pure genius with which the show was played. I recall both shows as lifetime highlights though that list seems to get longer and harder to place in quality order as the years pass.

Excellent. Nice side commentary by the artists also. Best possible substitute if you actually couldn't be there.

Concerning their setlists, wish they would do "Sea of Joy". What a vocal by Steve!

love that they have added "Going Down". really cool tune, but here is a question. Why not dust that one off with Jeff Beck who really made the song famous (after Freddie King). Love the Shape You're In as well.
