Bought Hell & High Water several years ago saying to myself "Guess I should at least have the Best of the Arista Years". I either never played it or just repressed the memory of it. Anyhow I just played it. How awful! The band (current version) should sue to get this off the market. The only song with anything to it is Angeline and I'm not sure about that one. I think I'm gonna be sick!

Let's see, this started with the breakup of Capricorn...the firing of Twiggs, the firing of Jaimoe, and the addition of Mike Lawler. It was a pretty sad time for the ABB. Extremely white music, imo.

Well, back then I was glad to see releases even happening. The first one is tolerable, but the second one is almost a parody of the band's influence on the music of the time.

I was happy for them to come out at the time.....

I like some of the songs....mostly the ones that Dickey sang on.

A couple of weeks ago...I took all the songs that Dickey sang on and the instrumentals and made me a Dickey CD. So I got something from them anyway.

I have the Japanese Imports...only ones I could still find.

But I can't say I "Hate" both of them........

Oh God,The Arista years...I can't even think about it! I still have visions of Mike Lawler with those goofy space-age shades and strap-on Casio keyboard....Just awful, really awful. This was some kind of bad dream right?

I don't think the ABB have ever made bad music. I like everything they've ever done, some more, some less, but I like it all.

I recently got hold of Reach For The Sky and Brothers Of The Road, and they sounded, ehm... not too good. I used to have Reach For The Sky in 1980s but sold it ages ago... I guess it didnīt sound too good even back then. The music on Brothers Of The Road sounds strange to having come from the brothers, itīs like AOR (adult oriented rock, what a nice label!). Iīll have to listen more carefully to these two albums to have an opinion... Brothers of the road, letīs reach for the sky...

I enjoy those as well, Brothers of the Road, Straight From The Heart, numerous others, not what the band is famous for but some decent songs. I also enjoy the rare 79/80/81 shows where most of the songs were played live.

Brothers of the Road: only good songs: Leavin' / Maybe We Can Go Back to Yesterday / Never Knew How Much (I Needed You).... wow, three of 10... sorry Dickey....
Reach ForThe Sky: Keep On Keepin On, 1 of 8, pretty bad.

During this time they made a concerted effort to mainstream by melding country into the sound.... country music was a mega god then, remember? Hot and new..... urban Cowboy.... Don't blame Arista or anyone but a concsious ABB decision in direction... didn't work.... Dickey was on autopilot then, all of them really....

I have an Arista promo pack for Brothers of the Road, two 7X10 black and white glossies, sh*t, cowboy hats everywhere...... a funny write up.....

I'll auction it! Starting Bid: .12 yes, cents! Increments: one cent bids. Get it outta my house! Please! Really!

I was just wondering.... how did cowboy hats go with plastic synthesiszers on straps?

A VERY Country image bird72, if the album cover alone is anything to go by!

I think the early 80's were a bad time for a lot of late 60's/early 70's artists - the Dead managed to avoid some of that, by staying away from the studio for several years, but others weren't so lucky...

As for synthesizers and cowboy hats: well, maybe not on the same record, but Neil Young did do folk/synth (Trans) followed by trad country (Old Ways), confusing and annoying both his audience and his record company.

Isn't hindsight a wonderful thing??!

Funny ODR, I seem to like the one's Gregg sang on. Well, most of them. "Things You Used to Do", "Leavin'" & "So Long" then of course "From the Madness of the West". But this came up really recently, take some of those better songs and strip away the production or better yet have the current lineup play them, you'll find there is some good music that was ruined by downright miserable production! The 80's were a bad time for this style of music...

Well I have a handful of shows from this era and they are surprisingly good. The band live was a different animal, that's for sure. Even some of the new songs of the time, were a lot more tolerable

Oh yes, one more thing, I don't think HELL & HIGH WATER - THE BEST OF ARISTA YEARS is a very good compilation. You'd be better off having the two albums!

Wait till the "Arista Years" Expanded and Deluxe Edition.... All the tracks that didn't make the albums and that 3rd Arista album that never was released..... Seriously there was one, I read.....

Sad, nobody wants my promo pack for .12! OK, make it .11!

Any meaning behind it? Welcome though, you'll have some fun here...

We're a little demented at times.
