we know speeding is bad... at least in excess of 80 on major Hwys... I think most travel at speeds of 70 to 75 on those major hwys.... so blinking is good for them... but the road rage person, weaving in and out... at speeds of 80 to 90.... to bad they get the heads up....

If the rule slower traffic keep right was obeyed, there'd be a whole lot less weaving. Properly executed, changing lanes is not inherently dangerous.

I have blinked to warn of da police to oncoming traffic.

Different kind of blink story: do you ever flash your brights at someone oncoming that has their brights on?

30 years or so ago...riding around in my car, with a bunch of friends... doing what we did while driving around back then... when an oncoming car had his brights on...I flashed mine on and back off...nothing, so when he got closer I just flashed mine on and left them on.....only to have him go by AND IT WAS A STATE HIGHWAY PATROL.

Talk about scared straight....luckily he kept on driving....

I do, and when I drove across country I also brought a cb with me so that I could hear and speak with the truckers. Those guys are hilarious. They know where every cop is on the road.

Urban legend or not?

i have heard that gangs for initation into the gang, drive with their light out at night & when or if you flash them to put their lights on, you become their next victim for the evening, dont want to know the rest of what happens, but i have heard some stories.

moral to he story, be careful who you flash..

You can get a ticket for warning about a speed trap in most jurisdictions.

sometimes they have unmarked cars looking for that.

Why do folks hit the brakes when they hit a speed trap, even when they are NOT speeding.
That's the reason I have radar detectors. So I can be warned about the sudden stops.
Most police have instant on radar guns so the radar detectors don't really help avoid tickets.

Rarely are Speed traps about safety, it's about revenue.
Cops sure like to sit at the bottom of hills.
and I have seen speed cameras placed there also.

The transmitter works sort of like a strobe light, the light shoots a code to detector that turn the lights green and the other 3 sides yellow into red. The transmitter is usually located in the light bar of an emergency vehicle, pd, fd and ambulances have them in Suffolk County NY.

I've heard that there are places in Mass where, late at night, you flash your brights at a red light and the light will change green. I saw it work once, at like 2am in Newton, but I guess that could have been a coincidence. Supposedly it's designed for cops but that doesn't really make any sense. Anyone ever hear about that one?

Nearly every intersection has magnetic sensors underneath the asphalt that let the signal system know there is a car there, in particular if there is a left turn signal.

Had a friend who lived halfway out in the country, late at night the light on the main road was set to always be green unless a car stopped to turn. Every time I was with him, he'd pull up to the left hand turn lane, blink his brights, and he'd get the arrow. One time, when we were about a mile away from said intersection I said, "Why do you always flash your brights when we come up to this light?"

"So I get the arrow."

"The brights have nothing to do with it. There's a magnetic loop sensor in the road"

"Yes they do! It works every time."

"But it has nothing to do with the brights."

"YES IT DOES!"

"Alright then, don't flash your brights this time."

The arrow turned as fast as it did every other time he flashed the brights.

I was smug. He was pissed.

The trouble with "speeding" is that most folks seem to think it's relative: too fast is faster than they are driving, without regard to whether they drive 55 or 85.

1975 - somewhere between NC and NY about 4 in the morning 3 bored truckers decided to play with an innocent 20 year old driver (me) They surrounded me (i was in the right lane) and drove me up to 100 MPH while all laughing on their CB's. Never was as scared in my life

Or as the late, great George Carlin put it, anyone slower than you is an idiot, anyone faster is a maniac.

There should be a stiff penalty for overuse of ellipses.

Or using commas instead of periods, hate that,,,,,

Remember the Seinfeld where Elaine broke up with her boyfriend for not using an exclamation point? Jerry referred to it as the only relationship that ever ended due to punctuaition.

People slow down when they see the cops car to be penitent and most cops will not come after you if you do that. If you don't slow down then they might come after you.

I used to, but haven't in years. In my small town, there is a CHP headquarters, and a sheriff's substation. I guess they like these beautiful mountains as much as anyone, as they love to hang out and try to catch speeders. Locals know where they tend to be, though, and it is mostly outsiders they get. The roads are too hilly and curvy to speed in my old truck.
