Don't believe I've seen this topic come up before (couldn't find anything under the "Search" facility), so does anyone want to come up with their favourite ABB song intros?

Mine's got to be Don't Keep Me Wonderin' - just a simple little slide lick, down & then back up a tone, but it gets me every time; the way Duane (and now Derek) hits the vibrato before the drums come in just gives me the shivers!

DKMW is my fav opener. It just snaps ya right in the ABB state of mind! It's like the dinner bell calling you to the table. Come and get it!

The piano in Ain't Wastin Time No More kinda picks me up off the ground and gently carries me inside if I'm loitering in the lobby when the show starts....I don't mind that.

That simple little, beautiful chord on the B-3 from Gregg on Dreams...gets me EVERY time....Ahhhh!
It just picks you up and carries you away to a big puffy cloud...until the song ends with that powerful crescendo...the whole band locked in tight...Dreams...Dreams...The ultimate ABB tune...Hey it might be the ultimate tune, period! Yeah, my favorite intro is...Dreams.
Think I'll go put on some Dreams today..."It will surely be, the end of me...YEAH!"...

For this past year, I particularly like the little Warren/Derek slide duels that lead into Hoochie Coochie Man.

Ah...yes. I kinda like my Dreams in the middle, though. Y'know, when you not only have your two feet in but you're up to your knees in the concert...the water's warm...you're feeling the groove...the energy is palpable. Then they break out Dreams and your knees just buckle and your whole body is in and swimming free! Yeah..I like that.

It seems like the intro to almost any of the tunes from the original band gets a little oooooh out of the crowd. I also love hearing that piano start up AWTNM but hey, I like 'em all anyway. When Derek starts coaxing that cool intro to MJ ..... Whew!

I've already cast my vote with Dreams...but that Mtn Jam intro lately with just Derek and Butch on the tympani...just beautiful how they s-l-o-w-l-y build that one.

Yep, when those soft little notes waft out into the crowd, you know you're in for quite a ride

Duh. I was thinking of intro as opener to a show not as the intro to a song. *chuckle* Either way, my answer's still the same--the intro to DKMW is quite the spine straightener.

Aw Hoppy....

Has nobody said Whipping Post yet? There's an intro that sets the tone for a song. Not that I disagree with any of the other selections.

The warmth of the piano on "Ain't Wasting Time No More" makes me feel complete. I have that Instant Live disc in my alarm clock and have been waking up to it. No matter the weather my day starts out great!

Taking "Intros" in another direction, here are two of my favorites:

MC at The Warehouse:

Ladies and Gentleman. Beaver Productions is proud to present,
Capricorn recording artists, from Macon Georgia, the pride of the south, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND !

Jimmy Carter at a campaign rally:

You love them, I love them : THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND

Always dug the volume swells on Liz Reed...and prefer a real long intro before they hit the main melody of the song..

High Falls... such a groovy, mellow vibe going on all through that intro...

Les Brers is sweet, too...

I agree with you islala -- I love the way Les Brers and High Fall just sort of materialize -- kind of come from out of nowhere, from silence to great swells of music, then quiet again, vamping up and down, staying with one note for all it's worth -- then Berry and Lamar kick-starting the rhythmic, melodic second part of the songs.
Oh dear -- been listening to Humble Pie lately -- when it comes to intros, not much more can get the feet akickin and the toes atappin' than the intro to Hot & Nasty -- also, the blast of Fender wah-wah that hits you in Jimi's intro to Rainy Day, Dream Away -- with that, back to ABB intros!

The opening few notes to Whipping Post, Layla and Brown Sugar always give me a charge.

Les Brers, live has the most dramatic intro simply due to it's unique combination of length and dramatic buildup...but I agree with Marley. The bass line into Whipping Post, in my mind, defines the Allman Brothers
