In May I'll be traveling to Arizona and will be sleeping overnight in Nashville on the way there. Can anyone recommend a good place to eat? I'm from PA and I love BBQ but not if its mustardy (sorry Carolinas). Anyone know of good flea markets on a sunday morning in memphis? I'll be getting up early and hitting the highway but I'd stop in Memphis for a good flea market.

I don't like much country music. Mostly just the outlaws like Willie, Waylon, Johnny Cash etc. I like guitars & record/CD shops a lot though. Any recommendations out there? Thanks in advance!

I like the club 3rd and Lindley it's a little bit outside of town but usually has good bands. Even if you don't like country music the little bars on Broadway are pretty cool if you haven't been there. There's a BB Kings on 2nd along with a couple other chain places hard rock cafe etc

Thanks. I have a Jack Pearson boot from 3rd & Lindley - I should have thought of that. Are there a lot of places on Broadway?

I've never been to Nashville, but I was in Memphis recently driving back from Washington DC. We stopped in memphis for a day. If you like record stores, Memphis Music is a great place. Also, Pig On Beale has great ribs to eat. There's lots of cool stuff on Beale Street, but can't help you with Nashville.

Memphis Music has lots of great blues albums. I got Johnny Winter's self titled album, Buddy Guy/s Heavy Love, & Eric Clapton Live In Hyde Park. Also got a BB King t shirt at the BB King Company store which is right next to his club.

The Rondevous in Memphis has the best ribs in the world. Also I've heard rave reviews from Interstate BBQ in Memphis. As for Nashville ... there are others who are far more knowledgable than I ... but the Country Music Hall of Fame is definately cool. jfk excuse me if I sound a trifle rude, but you are going to Nashville, the country music capital of the world and if the bbq was made from horse dung I'd probably try it. When in Rome do as the Romans do. You sound like you're asking for directions to a McDonalds in Paris for christs sake. Let me know when you are going. My buddy brings me a Nashville Scene every week. The talent playing there every night of the week is mind boggling. 3rd and Lindsley is having The Players play there this Wed or Thur which consists of Brent Mason, Paul Franklin, Michael Rhodes and Eddie Bayers who have probably combined. played on every hit out of Nashville in the last 20 years.

I'll be in Nashville 6-2 to see Neil at the Ryman. My friend, a Vandy grad, was telling me I had to stop in at Tootsie's. Any comments?

http://www.tootsies.net/index.html

Back in the 90's when I had more kin there, I would hit the Bluebird out toward West End to see some up and coming singer-songwriters. I assume it's still good? Had some great experiences there.

@Charlesinator - Nashville isn't really somewhere I'd pick to go - no offense meant - but it's a perfect spot to stop for the night so I'd like to know what's around and plan something to see or do. As for Horse, it's not the meat I'm worried about I just absolutely HATE mustard. Always have. I've had BBQ moose that was delicious!

Yup, Grimey's on the south side is a very cool CD store.

The Redezvous was closed (Sunday) when I was in Memphis last Sept. but I ate at Interstate BBQ and it was VERY good....the inside of my refrigerator smelled like smoke for a week after I finished the ribs....

Hugh REALLY knows Memphis. I would take his advice.

And this is really touristy, but if you have even 10 minutes I would still stick your head in the door at Sun Studios.....I didn't even take the tour last year but I HAD to walk in just to say that I had been there.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. I spent a few days and nights there when I saw Derek and Jack Pearson there last September and absolutely loved it. It is a very vital and cosmopolitan town and the people are just great. There's a WHOLE more going on there than just country music, believe me.

I'll go with what a few others have said, take a walk on lower Broadway. Gruhn's guitars is a candy store of guitars you'll never be able to afford, but you don't know who else will be there. Hatch Show Print is also in the same stretch, sort of a Smithsonian for show bills and posters. They still use block printing on a letterpress, each poster done by hand. Step in to Robert's Western Wear and have a "cold drink", shop for some boots and listen to the band in the window. But, whatever you do, do not seek out a little dive known as The Station Inn where some of the finest musicians play for their own amusement. You won't enjoy the swing and Americana music, especially if it's done by veteran side and studio musicians.
As for food, we're well fed here. Jack's is really good BBQ. I'm partial to Hog Heaven and Pleasant Ridge BBQ. If you're in early enough, try Monell's on 5th Avenue North. Go hungry, it's boarding house style, all you can eat of real southern cooking, including homemade preserves. Greek, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, Ethopian, African, Morrocan, and Meditteranian, all flavors and ethnicities available here.
Beyond that, I'll say drop me a line when you head this way, there's a million things to do in Nashville
