Mine is a whopping $245.

Our disfunctional governor, Patterson, in NY, decided to hold our state tax refunds for a few months because NY needs the $. I dont recall giving him permission to use my $. The guy is nuts....

NC is doing the same thing. I always try to make sure I am slightly underwithheld so that I can hold my money as long as possible.

i went to H&R Block today...gotta go back in a week since my wife and I always have a complicated return ...funny thing last year we got audited ok no problem we paid the extra with HRBlock for what they call peace of mind..anyway when we got the letter form the IRS we went to our tax guy gave him all the stuff they redid everything we sent it back to the IRS instead of the IRS trying to screw us saying we owed them it turned out we got another check from uncle same..

Dumb asses..

My question is, "How can this be legal?" By calling Patterson dysfunctional, you're being much too kind.

Don't know about how it works in other states but the same thing has happened in Alabama this year and last year. Alabama says they are sending out refunds as tax collections come in but blame slow collections on the economy. I think, by law, you have to have paid at least 75 or 80% of what you owe by April 15 to avoid filing quarterly so it would seem that even in the worst case where most folks have to pay on April 15, the state should already have at least half of the taxes already in their coffers. Alabama has to pay you interest on your refund if you don't receive it by July 15 but, other than that, you just have to wait. I suppose the lesson to be learned here is that you should adjust your withholding so that you get almost no refund at the end of the year and pay less tax throughout the year. Really, if you get a refund you're giving the state an interest-free loan for at least four 1/2 months and maybe even longer. If the state never gets an overpayment from you then you don't have to worry about getting it back in a timely manner.

the fact that you're getting a refund implies that you gave him permission to use your money all year!

My thread says IRS refund, not state.

Not nearly big enough. We pay quarterlies and always apply any refund to the first quarter payment so it doesn't matter to us when refunds are sent out.

I'm not complaining this year...I sold a house where the taxes were $12,000.00 a year. I bought a new house so I was able to get the $6,500.00 tax credit. Those credits offset the taxes I had to pay on alimony...in the end I did ok, it's my largest refund ever....and I'm sure it'll never be this much again.

PS - I live in NJ and God knows what shake-ups will be in store or us down the road.

My IRS tax refund is a -$1100. Those bastards always get my money. On the bright side, I guess that must mean that I am making money!

Also, do not forget: The US Postal Service will be CLOSED April 15th!!!

Do NOT wait till the last day as the Postal Service will NOT be accepting mail on the 15th.

The pain in NJ is only just starting, and it's about time someone stepped up and said enough with the out of control taxes and spending. I find it pretty funny that the teachers are screaming that they don't get a raise or if they get a raise some people get laid off, be happy you are earning and stop whining.
