I have a few questions about Derek's Washburn. How is the quality of this guitar? When's the last time Derek used it?

He hasn't played it with the ABB in at least a year- seems to have decided the SG gets a tone that suits them better. I'm not sure what he's playing with his own band right now. According to Derek, he'll play one as long as he's feeling hot, and switch when he needs something new.

Seems like a perfectly good guitar to me, but I think I prefer the Gibson's tone.

He stopped using the Washburn sometime after November of 2001..I saw him play, and he was playing the Washburn, and then the next time I saw him play, he was using the SG. He was using a SG when I first saw him in 99, as well..I think he mainly used the Washburn when Javier was singing, maybe the tone was a bit better match with that guitar...he still keeps it onstage with him, at least at DTB shows, probably in case he breaks a string, and needs to jump right back in, although the last time I saw them, he broke a string, and sat down onstage to change it right there, and didn't switch guitars.

So...whats my point? He's not using the Washburn much anymore...shame, because its a sweet guitar...funny thing is, right after he stopped using it, all these Washburn adds were popping up with him in them.

Well I'm going to guitar center possibly this weekend, so if they have that washburn I'll fill you in. By the way that guitar is so amazing.

Thanks dogofsky. I'm actually thinking of purchasing this guitar. It seems pretty sweet. Derek was using it at the ABB show I went to in 2001. That was a sweet show (8/21/01).

The Washburn is a Derek Trucks model, so he's the only one who can be in the ads.

it is? the adds said nothing about it being custom, and the name of the guitar doesnt indicate a custom job...theyre blue and black, too...instead of the yellow like his own is. I will also have to do some more research on the guitar..im lookin' for a new axe as it is.

I went to the washburn site and the W168 is between 1500 and 2000. All it says is that Derek endorses the guitar.

What guitar are we talkin' about the Idol 168 or his Custom/E300? I've never seen a Derek sig model on Washburns site that I can remember, because also I read about him having one that was supposed to be coming out but I never saw it on Washburn's site. I really like the look of the Custon/E300 and wisj they would put it out.

I was thinking of Derek's custom guitar, but maybe I'm out of date on the subject.

The more I look at his Custon/E300 the more I like it and want one. When I first saw it I was like thats kinda ugly, but now I'm like that an awesome looking guitar.

He auction off the Idol to raise money for the fund for Woody's daughter.

Last time I saw DTB he played both the Washburn e300 and the SG. (mostly the SG)

I don't think Washburn make the e300 anymore. In fact the picture
of Derek at Washburn.com has him with the Idol.

Peace
John

I love resurrecting old threads....

Derek has the Washburn E400 which is hollowbody and the E300 which is solid body. He played the E400 at the Beacon in 2001 and probably Summer 2000. After that he used the E300 until November 2002 with the DTB and he used the SG with the ABB. Now, here's my question:

Does anyone know any of the specifics for either the E400 or the E300 (i.e. pickups, wood, etc)?

Heres my answer. Find a guitar of your own choice, something that fits your style. Don't just buy a guitar that Derek plays, because I know there are other guitars out there that would fit your musical genre better bro. The Washburn and the SG sound excellent, true. But keep looking around, I bet you'll fall in love with the right one.. everyone has there own choice

i believe the washburn e300's were mahogany back/neck maple top, seymour duncan 59 neck pickup and seymour duncan custom custom bridge pickup, rosewood fretboard. i couldn't tell the difference between the e300 and the sg if i had my eyes closed, they're both gibson style things and he's derek through whatever he plays

Derek's yellow washburn is indeed custom and is not for sale although he used a few different washburns in the past. The one that derek endorses is the basic form of his custom model WI68 or E400 (both the same model).

Yeah I know. I'm just asking because I really liked the feel of Derek's E300 when I played it and this guy is building a guitar for me so I thought I'd base my specifications on the E300. Of course, I'm gonna add my own twinge to it. I'm probably gonna get soapbars instead of humbuckers and It'll be fully hollowbody.

Yeah I really like the sound of Jimmy Herring's three-soapbar PRS. Humbuckers are too strong for me.
