I thought that this might be an appropriate place for those of us who have lost someone to express our grief for a moment in a safe and respectable way.

I found out at about 3:00 this morning that one of my best friends, Andrew Poulson, my college roommate, groomsman in my wedding, and one of the kindest and loveable people I have ever known, passed away March 7th. He was a very sick alcoholic who tried for the past eighteen months to get help, but his body finally gave in. He was thrity one and leaves behind a young wife and step-son, to whom he was like a father.

He was there for me when I was in boot camp, making sure that my future wife Darcie, was never left alone too long, without a car, or many friends, to turn to. He was instantly family and a brother to me. He taught me how to be me in ways that I didn't know I could. He never asked for anything in return except loyalty to our friendship. And on that I faultered, missing his wedding, and not having talked to him much over the last three years. I am having a hard time right now, feeling guilty for not being there for he and his wife at his weakest moment. And I feel some changes coming on for me as a result of all of this happening now.

Andrew, I will always love you like the brother you were to me. God rest your soul and heal your family's pain from your loss.

I'm so sorry Brian - I have been at way too many wakes where the disease of alcoholism took the life of some too young. Any disease is horrible, but the despair of an alcoholic who can't stop drinking knowing that they are going to die is heart wrenching indeed. As much for the loved ones who also are powerless. My heart and prayers to the family and friends of Andrew.

I have been to too many wakes lately - 3 in the last couple of weeks. The worse one was for a 19 year old who died of an overdose. I know the whole family well - my kids and theirs grew up together, and all were very active in community sports, the church and such. We coached softball together.

Kyle couldn't "get it" either. He had just come home from the hospital for a previous OD, and didn't last a week until the demon got him forever this time. The wake was tough - his Mom has MS, and his Dad went into a diabetic coma the day after he was buried. His sugar went to 1600. He has been further put into a medically induced coma, hoping that maybe his orgarns will respond. He has a 25% chance of living. Please keep the McCarthy family in your prayers.

I know that no one gets out of this life alive, but it is sad when a young person is lost before they even get to truly IMAGINE what living their life is all about. Like Andrew and Kyle

Sorry for your loss my friend.

I have a friend going down the same road. Being in AA myself, he won't listen to a word I say, which I have to choose so very carefully. It's tough when you're veiws are blinded by such an incideous disease. Any offer of help is taken as a shot. I wish there was a better way to help these folks, cause I sure haven't found a good way.

Through death comes the opportunity to more fully appreciate this fragile and wonderful gift of life we have all received. Through death we can examine our obligation to live our lives more fully, more hopefully, more freely, more joyfully. Through death we can realize our responsibility to live better, to be the best we can possibly be, to not take anyone or anything for granted. Thanks Bobo.
