Photographer Jim Marshall Dies
| 03.24.2010
Legendary rock and roll photographer Jim Marshall died in his sleep last night. He was 74. Marshall is best known for his iconic shots of Jimi Hendrix burning his guitar at Monterey Pop, The Who greeting the sunrise at Woodstock and Johnny Cash flipping the bird at San Quentin. He was chief photographer at Woodstock and was the only photographer allowed backstage at The Beatles' final concert. Marshall had a special affinity with rock and roll artists, as he said himself, "I see the music."

Jim Marshall had just published “Match Prints” (a new book by Jim Marshall and fellow photographer Timothy White) and was due to appear at a media event for the book tonight in New York City.

********
jim was a good friend of the allman brothers band family and spent the day with the band and crew last may when the abb played at the fox in oakland.
jim spent all afternonn in the production office telling stories and talking about his life as a photographer and documentarian of rock history.
he brought several matted and signed prints of his famous shot of duane playing in the bathroom of the holiday inn in san fransisco in october of 1971 before the winterland shows. when the band arrived for the show he presented the prints to each of the band members before they went on. he stayed for a few songs and did a few shots of the band on stage but wasnt feeling well enough to shoot the whole show or stay till the end.
jim and galadrielle allman were very close and shared many good times together. he wrote glowingly about duane in a couple of his books and galadrielle wrote a piece for jim's new book "match prints" about duane.
jim shot some of the most famous shots of the abb and his impact will remain forever in the hearts of allman brothers fans.
the cover of the best live album ever recorded and dozens of iconic shots of the boys from 70 & 71 --- fillmore west-- winterland --- santa monica civic center --- memphis 9/71-- and macon on broadway across the street from the capricorn studio 4/71 --- all moments captured forever by jim marshall.
thank you jim, and god rest your soul

Thanks for the memories, Kirk. Sorry to hear of Jim's passing. At first I thought this was about the former mayor of Macon.

Thank you for this news, Kirk, and I hope you are well. I have one of Jim's books of photography, "Not Fade Away", and I love to look through it every once in a while--like maybe tonight.

Thanks, Kirk. Cool that he got to hang with the band one more time last year and shared the Duane print with everyone. Nice way to say good-bye.
