Drunk, high dad leaves baby in oven overnight, police say

By Jason Kessler, CNN
March 16, 2010 9:58 p.m. EDT

(CNN) -- A Kentucky man high on marijuana and drunk on whiskey put his 5-week-old son in the oven Sunday and left him there overnight, police said.

The oven door was slightly ajar, and the oven was not turned on.

After smoking marijuana at the restaurant where he works as a cook, Larry Long, 33, returned home to share a fifth of whiskey with the baby's mother, Brandy Hatton, McCracken County Sheriff Jon Hayden said in a statement.

Hatton had four or five shots and went to bed while Long finished the bottle, Hayden said.

At 5:30 the next morning, Hatton awoke to the sound of the baby's cries coming from the oven. He had been in it for several hours, police said.

Emergency crews responding to the scene transported the infant to a local hospital, where he was found to be unharmed.

The incident was reported to authorities by a psychiatric facility that Long turned to when he learned what he had done, officials said.

"He actually called a mental health crisis line immediately thereafter and told them that he had done this. And they contacted us," Hayden said.

Police arrested Long and charged him with first degree wanton endangerment. He is being held on bail of $10,000.

Long blamed his actions on the marijuana, which he believes was laced with a hallucinatory agent, officials said.

Authorities have removed the baby from its mother's care and awarded emergency custody to members of her family.

At least the guy is asking for help, recognizing that he had done something that could have had a tragic ending.

Why didn't the ambulance crew report it? I thought that they were required to do that on any call that finds child endagerment.

Yeah, doing drugs is not a healthy thing to do. But I'm guessing that anybody who'd think to put a baby in an oven - in any state of mind is probably not too far up the Darwin scale to begin with. Say he's from Kentucky, huh?

I'm guessing the fifth of whiskey he shared with his wife had more to do with his actions than the weed he smoked earlier.

I agree with Rusty. People who are prone to strange behavior only get stranger when they are toasted.

Kentucky bluegrass is getting a bad rap here.

Marijuana is not a drug, it is a weed that grows freely. The processed THC from the plant might be considered a drug, but don't tell the Pharmaceutical companies that. They might just implode!

Bingo. A fifth of whiskey (give or take 4-5 shots) drank in one sitting would make anybody stupid (but I agree - putting a baby in an oven doesn't sound like something that would occur to most people ... thankfully)

Was it a yeast infection that did him in?

Sounds to me like something made up to try to make marijuana a scapegoat. Maybe these people have mental problems because I have never heard such nonsense. You would need to be very, very, very wasted to do something so outlandishly stupid and irresponsible. I don't think the amount of alcohol they shared would f#ck them up enough to make such an irrational decision. So marijuana will get another black eye for something it had no bearing on and the booze will end up as an afterthought as always when it was probably the cause! What a bunch of bull$hit!!!

Sounds kind of like putting LSD in beer and blaming the resulting hallucinations on the beer.

just because it grows naturally doesn't mean it is not a drug.

it most certainly has a pharmacological response that makes it a drug.

many drugs are refined from natural sources.

Maybe it's just semantics and I'm sure I could be wrong, but i didn't think the actual plant was a drug. That's like saying the coca plant is a drug. THC, the active ingredient in marijuana could be classified a drug.

Either way, I am sure that marijuana was not responsible for this incident.

PCP is a whole 'nother ball game...this story is making more sense now.
