Okay, here's a little multiple choice.......
Whenever bringing up being a fan of the Allman Brothers Band, what
comment / reaction from "non believers" (people with a different taste in music) freaks you out the most:

A. Allman who?
B. Are they still around? i thought they were dead!
C. Didn't they die in a plane crash?
D. They should not have continued after Duane's death. It wasn't the ABB anymore.
E. Wasn't that dude with Cher?
F. Hell Yeah (followed by a large Burb), I love Skynyrd and Hatchett and oh yes the
Allman's too. The south will rise again........blah blah. the rant is often continued with
clichés like brining up Jack Daniels Whiskey and Harley bikes.
G. Do you REALLY like those jamming tie-dye hippies? Man, they are dinosaurs.
H. I stopped listening to them after they fired Dickey.
I. Those guitar solos give me a headache
J. Oh, they are great.......i love Freebird!
K. Aren't they rednecks? All those Southern Rockers are racists aren't they?
L. They have a new album? I thought they stopped ages ago!
M. Other........... fill in yourself

The southern rocker redneck thing seems to be perception from the not in know crowd(an unfortunately shared by my teenagers) and we live in the South. Also I recently met with a friend of mine who runs a large venue for all types of acts and events. I've tried convincing him of contacting the Bros and I was sure he could get at least 60% capacity. He tells me the bros are considered a Nostalgic act and can only play at mostly corporate sponsored venues that underwrite the event aka as the shed circuit- Nostalgic !! kiss my ... but he has been successful with the venue and seems to know what is best for the place..

One other thing.. the loss of Dickey has not helped with the fans that came on board after Duane, the perception is , it's not an authentic band anymore much like many hack oldies bands out there (again unfair)

While not about ABB, I once heard Dennis DeYoung, that no talent ass clown lead singer of Styx, claim that the Grateful Dead sucked. He made the lame, tired, old joke about what did one deadhead say to the other after the drugs wore off. It was on The List (what happened to that show) on VH1. As if I needed another reason to hate Styx.

Lamest response ever:

Allman Brothers? No, I don't care much for country music.

I'm with Magic Peach...

That's my least favourite response and also the most common of those who have no clue. Most people I mention it to respond with "Yeah, they rock!". Which is really cool.

That's that band that plays those songs that never end, ain't it?

Recently while talking to one of my friends online about the ABB, he spelled Allman, Almond. I suppose you could put that under "other."

Funny thing is, he got kicked out of Styx and that was "his" band. I guess the boys in Styx thought he was a "no talent ass clown lead singer" as well. LMAO

As a young lad, I did see Styx 3 time. I have to say, they did put on a good show every time. Can't even think about seeing them now. Still LMAO!

I never owned a Styx album, never saw them, and never will. Maybe it's me, but I thought they sucked. It's like this though, you either like something, or you don't. Like PhillyBob said, he's tried to get into the Dead, but just can't. I on the other hand couldn't imagine not liking the Dead. Music, the spice of life.

I'm with inked-up Neil here. I've been a Dead/Allman fan forever. And Styxx did suck.

Sorry Bob.

Rush wasn't so hot either.

And Journey really bit the big one.

I always thought Tommy Shaw was the best thing about Styx. He's a great songwriter and has done some of his best work away from Styx.
Just a side note:
I saw Mother's Finest in a support slot w/ Styx and they proceeded to mop up the stage with Dennis & Company's asses one night in Evansville, IN.
MF was touring behind their 2nd album and just blistered 'em ! Half of the audience bailed on Mr. DeYoung before his 3rd song.

Greetings n Salutations:

Let's hope n pray that the ABB never go on one of those 4 year "farewell tours" that is happenin now with an old 70's band from Ney York. I was weaned on the "real music" and for some reason became a metal head. My returning to my senses has been a blessing. I get alot of the throwing of the ABB in with " the southern rock crowd" when asking friends about them. All I can is laugh and say they don't have a clue as to what it's all about. The best and only thing I can do is to turn them "on" So I make em a copy of a kewl original line up show and hand it over with a smile. The majority of those I share with comment that they were different than they had imagined or that what they heard on the radio didn't do them justice. I can only smile.

Laters On
Be blessed
Brother James

I respectfully disagree. If they ever decide to retire, I hope they take a damn long time implementing the decision. The reason farewell tours from people like Cher and KISS are lame is because the players themselves stopped being interesting decades ago. Okay, also, doing multiple farewell tours (KISS is on #12, I think) is also lame, as is repeatedly coming out of retirement (The Who).

Hey Marley, Re the Who - What's the difference from breaking up and re-forming to coming out of retirement? The Who members continued to work on solo projects as did our beloved ABB guys. Townshend's solo stuff is great, pity about Daltrey's though. The mistake The Who made was becoming The Whorchestra when they toured in the 80's. Now that they've stripped back to the basics they were superb the last time I saw them in 2000. However, now that the Ox has departed I don't think it will be the same if they decide to continue. After 30 years a fan I didn't know how I would feel about seeing them for the first time ever back in July as DB wasn't there. Needn't have worried about that one! Just hoping that one of these years they'll get their asses over this side of the pond. And Mule too - you guys don't know how lucky you are all that great live music on your doorsteps.
