Well, just like in life, you all now have karma here on the Forum.

Everyone starts out with a neutral karma of 0.

If someone is spreading good Karma with a post, and you are logged in, you can click the thumbs up icon next to their karma rating and give their karma a bump up.

If someone is spreading bad Karma with a post, and you are logged in, you can click the thumbs down icon next to their karma rating and give their karma a bump down.

The minimum possible karma, which I hope no one ever gets, is -10000.

You can only vote on a member's karma once a day.

You cannot vote on your own karma.

If you are logged in, you can click "Profile" in the Forum header, and set a karma filter value. If you are logged in, posts by members with a karma value less than your filter value will not be displayed.

Your default karma filter is -10000 -- you see everything.

This will let the community police itself, reward itself, and you individually can decide you don't want to read posts from people the community feels have negative karma.

If you enjoy negative posts, you don't have to do a thing, you'll see it all by default. If you want to block out posts from negative people, you have the power.

Hit that note,
Rowland

Ooooh, yes ... I love it, too.
Now, if only LIFE offered such a simple "filter/solution!"

Well -- I thought it might be a way to tamp down some of the mean-spirited exchanges that erupt from time-to-time -- and it may have, indeed, served to do that. BUT -- there is something flawed with the system as the positive/negative ratings seem pretty random and frequently off-the-wall.

Example: Lana's karma keeps dropping ... what is that about? I guess I m in good company, 'cause mine drops for no apparent reason, as well. I notice it goes down even when I have not posted in many days ....

ANYWAY, bottom line is -- unless I can no longer read posts/info -- it is easy enough just to ignore the whole karma thing which is what i have been doing and will continue to do.

Best intentions, though. No doubt.

Rowland, I had to go search out one of your posts to increase your karma for doing the topped thread housecleaning. Thanks. Why does a thread author not have a karma checker?

Hi Brock -- thanks for looking for me -- my karma feels better already!

The thread author is in a different part of the code and I've done enough coding on this for one day. I may add the karma checker there too, but the use cases are a lot trickier than handling posts. E.g. if the thread author's karma rating is lower than your karma filter setting, do you not show the thread at all? not showing the initial post in the thread, but showing the other posts in the thread, could be confusing. Should the thread show up in the Board Index?

Posts themselves are straightforward so I stopped at that point. May do some more another day, let's see if this has any value.

best,
Rowland

Great idea, Rowland, you just made my day

Just for a point of reference, how much negative karma do you need to get voted off the island?

Hiya Mike,

Back atcha, Bro

I read that part, but it doesn't list a penalty. I'm just wondering if there is an ultimate penalty?

The more I read into this, it is a filtering mechanism. Pre set your own personal level of comfort.

The Vibes, positive or negative (if it is that black and white) are always there and alive. If I'm reading this correctly, this just allows the collective to label each other as such and therefor have a means of filtering what we view........I suppose for those that allow "negative" posts to ruin their vibe........

Yes, it is a way for each person to decide if they want to limit what they view to posts from people the community may have rated lower than a given threshold. While watching people's karma go up and down is interesting, the primary purpose is so you can filter out posts from the negative posters. Or just ignore it and see everything.

While the initial impulse is naturally to give a thumbs up to people you "like" -- the best value will come if people are rating posts rather than people.

Im not sure what to say. A virtual popularity contest? I already know of one person going around and downgrading the 'karma' of people he disagrees with, whether their point of view should be seen by others is irrelevant with something like that. And if that same person has people to back him up, well, you see where this 'karma' thing is not worth anything.

I hope that people are smart enough not to need a system to tell them who to read and who not to read based on some arbitrary numbers.

For example: Lets say a poster makes a very interesting post, but someone who has been banned a bunch of times and has mulitiple user names set up doesnt like that, so he spends 15 minutes logging in and out of various accounts he has to downgrade that persons 'karma' to -20. Someone comes along and looks at the karma rating and passes on something they might have enjoyed reading. Success!
