Miguel Cabrera arrives to spring training early, in shape and all smiles
By Tom Gage The Detroit

Lakeland, Fla. — What a stark, but pleasant difference a year has made for the Tigers' Miguel Cabrera.

Last year, on his way to spring training, he was detained by police. It was an ugly scene, as you'll recall.

This year, he arrived quietly and was in the batting cage Saturday by 9 a.m. — six days before the first official workout for position players.

No fanfare, no throngs of reporters waiting for him — and not only without the damaging baggage of controversy, but also without as much weight.

"Told you he looks good," said Tigers catcher Alex Avila — as he, too, headed to the cage for swings.

Unlike the news conference and serious, subdued tones that accompanied his arrival at spring training last year, Cabrera was all smiles this time — before and during a session of signing autographs for fans.

"He's in good spirits, but normally is," said manager Jim Leyland. "His face usually lights up the clubhouse."

There's a new slugger to be in good spirits about, however.

"We signed Prince Fielder," Cabrera said. "It's going to be fun." Part of the reason it's going to be fun for him, as well as for the Tigers, is this: Cabrera has fully embraced the move to third base, which the signing of Fielder, a first baseman, caused.

"Not only did he tell me he wants to play third," said Leyland, "he's been wanting to play third.

"He's real upbeat about it. I think he's excited about the opportunity."

Plus the reports of Cabrera being in excellent condition are correct.

"He's been working hard," said Tigers strength and conditioning coordinator Javair Gillett. "He looks great."

Cabrera's swing appeared to be in top form, too.

"I'm sure he could take me deep," said hitting coach Lloyd McClendon, who threw to him. "But that's easy."

It also would have been easy for Cabrera on Saturday to look around at the talent on this Tigers team and sound overconfident. But he's not overconfident — just confident. In the same way he's quietly upbeat about his positional switch. Instead of making pronouncements about his ability to play there, his replies indicate he's merely taking it in stride.

"I have to do what I can do," Cabrera said. "We're here to do what the skipper wants us to do. I like third base. If he wants me to play third, I want to play third. "It's going to be hard, but I'm motivated."

Leyland likes what he's already hearing. "I think he's on a mission," he said, "but when your veteran players buy into what you are trying to do, that's when you have something going. You aren't putting out unnecessary fires.

"We want all our people on the same page, working toward the same goal, and that (goal) is trying to win something. "But when we moved him to first base, he was fine. His attitude is tremendous, but it always is. This guy is special."

As far as being dedicated to showing the world he can play third, Cabrera said that's not the case. Instead, he's determined "to do my best to win games."

Cabrera fielded questions about his weight, of course. They're pertinent because he's lost 20-or-so pounds, but he said, "I get asked about my weight every year — everybody always talking about the same thing. "And every year I say OK. But it's going to help me a lot to lose more — and get in my best shape."

Without putting a number on what weight is best for him — although Leyland indicated 255 pounds would be optimal — Cabrera said, "My goal is to be at a good weight for the season.

"And to be 100 percent for the first day."

Cabrera hasn't gotten distracted, and it sounds as if he won't be, by the thought of an awesomely powerful 3-4 tandem with Fielder. "It looks good in the paper," he said, "but you've got to do it. You have to go out there and still play baseball.

"Hopefully we can produce a lot of runs."

Nope. They haven't thrown the first pitch yet.

Mariano announced today that he has made a decision concerning playing past the 2012 Season; but will announce it at some point in time. Sounds to me like "Let's see if C.C. keeps the weight off and if Derek at Ste-rod continue to age in tandem."

The Royals have been eliminated since 1986.

Tek makes his retirement official tomorrow. End of an era in Boston. I know it was time, but still sad to see him go. Came to the Red Sox in 1997 along with Derek Lowe in a trade for reliever Heathcliff Slocumb, which is probably the best deal Dan Duquette ever made.

I heard that Varitek is going to stay in the Sox organization in some capacity but I didn't hear doing what. Did you guys hear what position he will have? I am guessing some assistant to someone in the front office. Something along those lines...

Haven't heard anything specific, just that he's expected to have "a position" with the team. I suspect it will be more of an on-field position as opposed to front office through. I suppose we'll find out soon, he retirement presser is at 5:30pm today.

That plan is already spun into place.

Totally cool with this.

If they hadn't been stupid enough to sign A-Roid they'd be under that number already

1 - Unlike Bonds who seemingly had a long career prior to drug tainting not quite sure if Arod had many pre-steroid years.

2 - Not his fault that Yankees signed an idiotic contract; but the drug use probably should allow teams to invalidate them. His rapid decline is linked to roid withdrawal

3 - .330/50/150 in late innings up or down by 5 runs .270/30/95 in the clutch. The anti-Jeter

I remember being a kid and watching my dad play softball. His team was down by 7 runs; rallied in the last inning and their best hitter came up with them one run down. My dad told me it was time to leave; this guy can't do it in the clutch. Didn't Arod become the first guy to end two post seasons in a row for a team? It may have even been woth a K
