Hat's off to the Rangers. They clearly were the superior team. All sorts of records broke tonight.
Go Texas when they play the Yanks!

The Rangers have only been in the post season three previous times, and were crushed by the Yankees every time. They still have never won a post season game at home. Beat the Yankees and maybe I can quit thinking of these guys as the minor league team I grew up with playing in that funky park in Arlington all those years. If their bats wake up they could actually be dangerous.

It was good to see all those TB fans get it shoved in their face -- they ignore them all year long & only pack it to capacity for the deciding game (or when tickets are free) -- like it's some sort of social occasion too or something -- a team can't be sharp knowing it plays to a blank audience, for the most part -- TB played awesome this year though

Halladay-Lincecum, Game 1 -- best matchup since Pedro-Clemens in ... '99? Old fogies easier recall Gibson-McLain, '68 WS

So, what's the over/under on how many outs are recorded before the first run is scored in game 1 of NLCS?

When the Rangers filed for bankruptcy in May, the team still owed Arod $25 million. Not sure where it stands now after the bankruptcy, but even if they owe him money it is not technically considered payroll. Still, the financial differences between the two teams are staggering...

- The difference between Alex Rodriguez (Yankees’ highest-paid player) and Michael Young (Rangers’ highest-paid) is Mark Teixeira.

- For the price of Alex Rodriguez, you could sign every Texas Ranger except the six highest paid.

- The difference between the Yankees payroll and the Rangers payroll is the Cubs payroll. The Cubs have the third-highest payroll in baseball.

- Cliff Lee, C.J. Wilson, Colby Lewis and Tommy Hunter (all of Texas’ playoff starting rotation) combined make less than Mariano Rivera – the Yankees’ closer.

- The Yankees won 95 games at $207 million. The Rangers won 90 at $55 mil. The Yankees paid $30.4 million per extra win.

- The Rangers could triple every current player’s salary, sign Mark Teixeira away from the Yankees, and still have a lower payroll.

Vladamir Guererro at $5,550,000 and Jeff Francoeuer at $5,000,000? Something a little out of whack there?

At first glance, it would appear that way. But look at it this way, Vladi is basically a DH now, he started only 16 games in the field. He was a free agent and there were not many other than the Rangers interested. Francoeur signed a one year deal which was based on the fact that he hit .311 for the Mets and is a very good right fielder with a great arm.

Speaking of Francoeur and the Mets...I read a quote from him where he said that's he excited to finally be able to play a meaningful game in New York.

"This day in baseball"
In one of the greatest pitching duels in baseball history, Warren Spahn, 42, and Juan Marichal pitched 16 scoreless innings July 2, 1963 at Candlestick Park, with the Giants beating the Braves 1-0 on Willie Mays' HR.
In an era of closely monitored pitch counts, relievers being paraded in and out of games regardless of the score or situation -- the Twins used no less than eight pitchers in their 5-4 loss last night to Tampa, who used six pitchers of their own -- and injury-prone pitchers suceptible to any and all maladies, this was the real thing -- pitching at its peak, when baseball was a game. Indeed, Spahnie himself said it years later, in this 1999 interview:
"Baseball has (since) made non-athletes out of pitchers, unfortunately,” Spahn said in July of 1999. “Why would I want my son to be a pitcher … when you pitch once a week, they count the pitches and you don’t get to hit and you don’t get to run the bases.”

That must've been outrageous to have witnessed the later innings of this pitching duel!!

Not looking too good for tonight but remember. You only need to win by one and tomorrow the score is 0-0.
