Braves in first place! The Phillies picked a bad time to go into a slump.

Jays would be first in 3 of 6 divisions and are one game back in other two. Being stuck in the AL east sucks!!!

Not sure who in Taranaha a"greed" to being stuck with Red Sox and Yankees but man when every year you know your team is going to have travel an almost impo$$ible road to get to the playoffs there is no way you can question folks not showing up to the park.

Kudo's to TB Rays they are on fire.

What a terrible call at first base tonight in Detroit. Two outs, bottom of the ninth and Armondo Galarraga loses a PERFECT GAME on an easy ground ball play. The replay shows the runner out by at least a step. The umpire has admitted he blew the call and cost the guy a perfect game. Unreal.

Die-Hard Tigers fans here.

I was watching the game live for the last three innings, hanging on every pitch. That call made me just sick to my stomach. It's a good thing I was in a bar watching it cuz if I had been watching it at home I would be at Best Buy this morning replacing a destroyed TV.

If there's any silver lining to this it's that I HOPE we finally get instant replay. All of the other major sports have it, why can't Bud Selig pull his head out of his ass? They did finally institute it for fair/foul homers, but only after several wrong calls in the playoffs.

Bud Selig should step in and reverse that call and put the perfect game in the record books. I doubt anyone would seriously object. But we know he has no spine and would never do it (come on Bud, prove me wrong!).

It appears reports of Big Papi's demise were premature (2 for 2 with 2 BBs and game winning HR last night)...

David Ortiz was named the American League Player for May (Jon Lester was named AL Pitcher of the month). In 23 games in May, Ortiz hit .363 (29-80) with four doubles, 10 home runs, 16 runs scored and 27 RBI. The 34-year-old also posted a Major League-best .788 slugging percentage and a .424 on-base percentage. Last month marked the second time in his career that he has tallied at least 10 homers, 25 RBI, and a .350 batting average in a calendar month, previously accomplished in June of 2004.

I'm going to be at the game in Detroit this afternoon in the eigth row behind homeplate. I think Jim Joyce (the wrong call umpire) is behind the plate for this game, so it should be interesting. I actually feel worse for Joyce than I do Galaraga. Everyone knows that Galaraga threw a perfect game and they admire him for it, but the poor ump will have to live with this for the rest of his life. It was his career defining moment.

As for instant replays, personally I'm not in favor of going that route. I like the human element of umpiring.

Yes, he is the home plate ump today. I hear what you're saying on feeling bad for the guy and the human element but there's gotta be a way to fix a blatantly bad call or two a game.

Further, if there had been a way to correct that call, then Jim Joyce's legacy wouldn't be for that missed call. Apparently he's a really good ump.

I am against instant replay... But continued situations like last night could change my mind.

IMO, Bud should give it to the kid.
But like Scott said, Bud has no backbone whatsoever, so that will never happen.

Anyone else see Galarraga's interview afterwards? He was amazingly positive and upbeat, bascially said "umps are human and we all make mistakes, no need to dwell on it or get upset about it". He even gave Jim Joyce a hug when Joyce came up to him to apologize. Very classy.

Yep, Bud could make this right if only he had the balls to do it, which we know he doesn't. Would not impact the game at all, and even though Jason Donald would lose a hit I doubt even he would object. Three perfectos in one season, crazy!

Been listening to talk radio this morning and to your point about giving it to him, some guy addressed that and said yeah but what if the guy that got the hit had a hitting streak going? Interesting point.

I don't think you can un-do something a day after the fact. I just want the correct call made on the field/court/ice.

They can, and do. Official scorers change hits to errors and vice versa after the play quite often, and sometimes even after the game is done. Think replay has anything to do with that even though it can't "officially" be used for anything other than the HR calls? (I don't know if it ever has, but that kind of reversal could certainly impact a no-hitter or a batter on a hitting streak). The commish should step in and fix this, IMO.

(and it just happened in the NBA as well...C's center Perkins was incorrectly T'd up for a flagrant elbow foul in game 5 of the Magic series. If it stood he would have had to sit out game 6. But the next day upon review the T was reversed/negated after the game and he was allowed to play (although now if he get's a T in the Finals, it will indeed cost him a game).

Maybe open up replays for stat calls only if no hits have been allowed past the seventh inning. Something like that would have prevented this mistake.

Correct. The official scorer can change a hit to an error or vice versa after the fact but Otie is correct.

A hit or error is different as it is a stats call and doesn't have any effect on the outcome of the game. The problem with replay is who decides to look at it? Right now, only the umpires can decide to look at HR replays. The manager can ask but the final decision is up to the umpires. If replays are allowed, how many can be used and who decides when to use replay? There are complaints about the length of games now, how much time would this add?

I'm NOT advocating expanded use of in-game replays. I used the scorer's changes as an example of calls do indeed do get changed (with the help of instant replay), and while not impacting the win/loss outcome of the game, scorer's changes do impact statistics of pitchers and hitter and could impact milestones like no-hitters and hitting streaks. In that regard I see this this situation as similar, i.e. changing Joyce's call would have no impact to win/loss outcome or any other "team" aspect of the game, and would only impact individual stats of the pitcher and batter, much like changing an error to a hit or vice versa would.

How much did Houston play Guzman? 3 errors , dropping a fly ball with 2 outs in the ninth to lose it for the Nats.

I thought Riggleman is about Defense. Why is he even playing a slacker like Guzman?

Bud Selig is an ass. Could have been a great story, baseball rights a wrong, baseball has a heart its not all $$$ and butts in seats. Baseball understands that the fan wants this corrected and we'll go along with the fans.
