Cubs just announced that Carlos Zambrano is being taken from the rotation and sent to the bullpen. Little early to press the panic button. He hasn't pitched that bad and he hasn't pitched out of the bullpen in forever. Wow, this is surprising!

I think this is a bit of an attitude problem.

Like they didn't already know this though?

Nine steals in five innings

with Jason Varitek sitting on the bench -- yes Wake's knuckler is easy to steal on but it was never like this -- we're dead last in catching runners stealing -- Victor Martinez is a good player but even his three hits tonite don't make up for that -- Get Varitek Back In There, Please -- they never ran wild on Wake like this when Mirabelli was around

Tito, rectify please -- & while you're at it, start platooning Lowell w/Big Papi -- I love Big Papi, but we're headed for the cellar & Something's Gotta Be Done

Varitek threw out less than 20% of the base stealers last year, and that was catching fastball pitchers. Thinking Varitek would catch more base stealers is a pipe dream. Besides, he can't catch a knuckleball.

You can break out all the numbers/percentages you want
Sox fans know that no team has ever come close to nine steals in five innings off Varitek -- so, put that in your pipe & dream on -- I would be an improvement over nine steals in five innings -- but yeah, let's just leave Martinez in there

go Sox, 7-7, bottom 11th
& go Broonz -- this win would be large

Not yet, We have Darnell Mcdonald to save us!!

I was quite depressed when, in a tie game in the eighth inning Don Orsillo says "this is the guy you want up now" when Mcdonald came to the plate.

At least we have great pitching?

I agree with Otie on Varitek, He would not be much more successful at throwing out runners. The drop off in offense would not be compensated for by the miniscule uptick in SB prevention.

Yes, Varitek's "dropoff in offense" has been totally in evidence as everyone has seen in his limited appearances this year -- that's why he wasn't brought in in last night's game, and if he had, it's not like he would've gotten a hit or anything -- and yes runners have run wild on Varitek over the course of his career -- that's why he's had a completely nondescript career as a mediocre-at-best catcher

as I said, I agree with you geniuses -- leave Martinez in there -- maybe they'll bring back Bob Tillman or Gary Allenson too!!!! Tek couldn't do any better than those guys, now could they

Wasnt really that impressed with the outing. Still struggling to keep his head together out there.

Hughes has been a BEAST so far this season.. Sure hope that continues.

I assume you mean the Lovable Losers, AKA Chicago Cubs....

They are off to a painfully slow season - AGAIN. Like for the last 100 years or so.

Even my father, who died in '05 at age 79, never saw them win a Series. I doubt it I will either.

Piniella demoting Zambrano to the bullpen is Lou's way of telling Hendry that he's been given sh!t to wsork with (and not just in the pen) and that the only way they can win games beyond the 8th inning is to use their best pitcher, at over $20 million per year, since the they might have the worst bullpen in Major League history thanks to Hendry's pathetic talent evaluation.

What a diaster.

Actually, I meant CC Sabathia. He gave up 3 runs in the 1st this afternoon...

'Course the Cubs aren't really lighting things up this year yet, either.

Go Yanks!

I've ALWAYS been a Yankees fan.....one of the thrills of my life was when I finally got to visit (the old) Yankee Stadium on Easter Sunday when I was at the Beacon in '07. Even it snowed during the game and it was freezing, A-Rod homered and I had a blast sitting and talking baseball with the Dominican and Puerto Rican gangbangers in the RF bleachers....

Awesome! One of my favorite Yankee Stadium moments was in July 2000 during the first day night double header against the Mets. The day game was at Shea Stadium. Doc Gooden pitched a good game, getting a win for the Yanks and we took the subway over to the Bronx with 1,000s of crazed baseball fans. It was hot and people were drunk and packed into the subway like sardines. It was the best subway ride I've ever been on

So we get to Yankee Stadium. Now we had tickets for the day game but not the night game. It was our intention to just buy a couple tickets on the street and hit the night game.

But as we were searching for tickets to buy there was a rumor spreading that cops were busting people for scalping and for buying tickets and they were hauling people off to jail. Well that kinda freaked us out and we sort of resigned ourselves to watching the game in the bar across the street. So we get to the bar and the national anthem is playing and we thought, let's try one more time to get tickets. So we ran out the door, bought tickets (great seats) from the first guy we see for dirt cheap. He just wanted to unload them. We get to our seats and one of the first things we see was Roger Clemens plunking Mike Piazza...

What an electric feeling in the Bronx that night...

So you were there when Clemens had his 'roid rage meltdown? Wow. That is awesome.

This isn't on the same level, but I'll never forget the time I was at Comsikey Park and Black Jack McDowell (what a dick) hit Mark Whiten (I think he was with Toronto then) and Whiten decked McDowell with one punch. I'll give McD credit for standing his ground - and trying to own the plate.

Not the one in the World Series where he threw the end of the bat at Piazza. But I was there that summer where he beaned him...still not one of Clemens better moments.

Do you think it was intentional? Knowing what I know about RC now, I have to wonder.

I'm still shocked about the steroids thing with Clemens - I used to work with a woman who was from Boston and knew RC and his wife really well - knew them from Boston and when she was assigned the Dallas territory when Clemens pitched for the Rangers she would babysit Clemen's kids when he was on the road and his wife would join him. I was good friends with her - when I was (stupidly) contemplating buying a boat in '07 she told me Clemens had like 3 of them and wanted to get rid of them and she'd talk to him about it....luckily it never went any further, wouldn't want to negotiate with RC - and when the whole steroids thing blew up about him I didn't have the heart to ask her about it. It had to crush her...she really liked his family and she was a shrewd, tough, Boston Irishwoman. If it had been an obvoius thing I doubt she would have respected him and his wife, who took HGH. It had to hurt her to be fooled like that.
