Well, the last time Warren was in the band, there were a few great years in the 90's, certainly one of my favorite eras. Then he left to concentrate on the Mule full time because (I think this is what I read..?) of the lack of 'new material'. So for me it sort of begs the question-will it happen again? Now that Gov't Mule have a full time bass player, and seeing as though Warren was responsible for writing much of the material on the new ABB cd, do you think it will play out the same way, with him leaving again? And if so, what then for the ABB? Does Betts come back, do they hang it up, get someone new..??

Thoughts?

Warren is here to stay, guaranteed. He is now from what I've read an equal partner. The band is letting him lead the way and carve a new direction but still remaining true to their roots. He puts together most of the setlists and the band is fine with it and even encourages it. He is actively writing with Gregg where they seem to have developed a real strong song-writing team/ partnership. The most important factor is they are a happy, cohesive and the chemistry is perfect. There is way too much on the table now for him to just walk away. I would bet on this lineup staying put for at least a couple of more years. Also, The ABB only plays about 60 shows a year which leaves Warren plenty of room to keep The Mule going strong as well.
What would I like to see? Derek and Oteil writing some stuff together. Some real Jazzy things which is their strong point and a direction which I think The Band can move into very naturally...which they seem to be doing with great results.

I'm with Eddie P. If I hear so much as one new Oteil/Derek tune in March, I'll flip. And I think it's a real possibility. Everyone in the band, Warren included, has said things now are much better than they were his last time around. It's not just that there was no new material, I think it's that when Warren wrote something new, he'd end up feeling it didn't fit the band, or that even if it did, the ABB wouldn't play it. I think he felt like he and Allen had to try and make it on their own, which they have, and that the two of them were frustrated that they were the only ones trying to move the ABB forward. That's not true anymore, since the band is willing to test its limits and is letting Warren use all of his skills and energy.

Yes, I agree too. The "lack of new material" reason Warren & Woody gave about their departure was really a generic "catch-all" answer as to why they left. Although, the new material was part of the problem, there was much more behind it. Many, if not all, of the other issues seemed to have been resolved or have changed through the natural course of time. Plus, the band is willing to give Warren the time to do his other projects. - I see great things for the future of the band. Maybe at some point, they will decide to put the band on hiatus for a while, or forever, but I can really see this lineup sticking together. In fact, I feel (this is just a guess) if anyone would want to leave it would be Derek, maybe Oteil.

EddieP, everything you said makes a lot of sense.... logical.... therein lies the problem. Look at the ABB over time, and well, how much logic could you have used all along to predict the future? hehe Just the ying to the yang, always devils advocate.... but I do agree with ya.
