Going to shows is always fun, great to see some live music. We always get off the best at the arena or stadium listening to a live show

However no matter how much we love going to shows, there are always a few drawbacks.... things we hate due to the behavior of the fans, the security, the band itself. These things irritate you quite a bit.

For example here are a few things that irritate me at shows:

1. Overlong intermissions- I usually go to shows with more than one set. Sometimes the artist stays backstage for at least an hour and it gets tiresome waiting for them to come back on.

2. Extremely boring pre-show and intermission recorded house music- While waiting interminably for the performer to get onstage there always is third rate music being played over the house PA by third rate artists. I'd rather hear familiar music that has some energy which I can enjoy.

3. Too many female backup singers- Anyone remember the Police's Synchronicity Tour? Great songs ruined by the presence of female backup singers. What was Sting thinking? Many other bands have done this.

What are some of the things you that irritate you at shows?

Having someone play harmonica in the audience thinking their "Jamming" with the band

People talking on their cell phones

People holding their cell phone up

People talking during the songs

People barfing on my blanket...it's happened

shows larger than 1500 - 2000 people

The three things you mentioned don't bother me, Barry, but people barfing on my shoes does...it's happened.

Mostly people talking during the songs, even though I do it myself sometime.

1. Bands showing up WAY WAY WAY late.

(a) It's disrespectful to the people who pay money to see you;

(b) I like standing around drinking as much as the next guy. But, if that's all I wanted to do, I'd have just inivted some folks over to my house.

2. Probably pretty obvious, but bad sound/mixes. I hate when a concert turns into just a mush of sound, and you can't distinguish anything.

3. Obnoxious fans.

4. Obnoxious workers.

AND THE WORST? NO ENCORE. Who the hell puts on a show with no encore?

Me too. I avoid large venues like the plague.

People that show up late and rudely tell me I'm in their seat. 9 times of 10 they are wrong.

I'm actually growing tired of encores, or at least the fiction that the audience is bringing the band back by cheering. Just play through and let us applaud at the end.

Here's my "ABB specific" pet peeves...usually from conversations at shows I overhear or somehow get sucked into.

1. No, dude, Dickey isn't in the band anymore.

2. I'm sorry you didn't hear a greatest hits show.

2a. That's because they play a different setlist every night. Have been for many years now.

3. Stop shouting "Freebird." It was funny...once, many years ago.

4. I love the song Whipping Post too. This does not encourage me to yell "WHIPPING POST!" 50 times between every song. This also applies to shouting "PLAY ALL NIGHT!"

5. Is in a way related to peeve #2. "What's with all this new $hit they're playing?" Um, dude, Black Hearted Woman isn't a new song. It's just not Melissa, Jessica, Midnight Rider or Ramblin' Man, which I'm guessing is the extent of your knowledge of the ABB catalog.

6. No, Duane didn't get hit by a peach truck.

I expect different behaviors from the fans at the shows. I have seen it all and I have learned to ignore it. Loud talking during the performance, I think, is the most disrespectful thing a fan can do. The main thing that pisses me off are the fees LIVE NATION charge. Especially the per ticket parking charges.

No doubt. Gregg reminded me of a washed up lounge singer on that one.

Fundamentally, it's basically people who are there to see each other, as opposed to those who came to see and hear the band. I've mellowed over the years. Had to.
Woulda' committed a felony or had a stroke otherwise, as the rudeness and ignorance has grown over the years. I accept it now as part of going to a show.

My other peeve is seeing and paying for a show by a band that is underrehearsed or impaired. Most disrespectful of me and my money. And everybody else's. Haven't mellowed on this.....it is very rare anymore.

Being hit over the head by some fool with a vodka bottle. Very peeved when I came back around after that one.

I agree. They are completely staged and part of the set anyway. I let others scream away. it was cool when an encore actually meant something.

Biggest peeve is the prices.

Also people singing all night long. I didn't pay to hear you sing out of tune. Some people think they are impressing those around them with the knowledge of the lyrics (that is if they even get them right) and think they are the artists biggest fan. Truth is that if you are really a fan then you would like to hear the artist. Go line up for American Idol and leave us alone.

I like the tension of wondering what they might play. You've heard a set or two, you KNOW which one(s) of our favorite song(s) haven't been played yet, and then the hoping begins . . . although that can lead to major letdowns, like when the Brothers play Southbound.

I have the show from a taper who was 4-5 seats down from me and sadly he picked up screamer all to well

DItto on those 'parking' charges ... especially irritating when no driving or parking is involved!

David Bromberg used to keep a tape of Freebird with him, and if anyone shouted FREEBIRD! during a show he'd put on the tape and take a 15 minute break.

The space invasion thing is my biggest peeve.

Folks who buy balcony seats and try to squeeze their way into my orchestra row or stand in the aisle blocking my view. In a seated venue, STAY IN YOUR F-ing seat!

Also, in a general admission situation, don't squeeze your way from the back to the front. Its just dickish behavior. If I stand in line for an hour, then hold my ground up front for another 90 mins waiting for the band to begin, what gives you the right to plow your drunken self into the 4 inches of breathing room that I have in front of me? Its like a bunch of 11 year olds trying to cut in line in elementary school. LAME.

Its just common courtesy, common sense, something I would never do to someone else. But it seems to happen at almost every show I attend.

I like Hawk's list.

Some of my own:

Long lines at the bathroom (I avoid beer now for that very reason).
Let me spark up once or twice, I'm not hurting anyone
People who stand when no one else is.
People who stand and invade my space, pushing me down the aisle into someone else's space.

I agree. My favorite was at the Greek Theater at Berkeley a few years ago. The Brothers had played Mountain Jam, Dreams, and Whipping Post in the set. What could they encore with? There was only one option...Layla, and they nailed it.

While we were all saying it had to be Layla, I honest to God heard a young hipster behind me suggest....Pony Boy.

I remember seeing John Mellencamp back in '92 and he said near the end of the show "I hate encores, I think they are pretentious, and I won't ever do one!!" So he did the show without an encore.

Then I saw him again two years later (94) and he did an encore. I've always wondered if he either forgotten about what he said in 92, or if he caved into the overwhelming pressures of concert cliche!
