Is it the melody?....or the size of the fan base? Is it how many times a song is covered? Or the lyrics? How about if you like it?.. does that make that songwriter... great? Do they have to have written 50 "Great" songs?

Some of the most memorable songs in R & R have been written by people whose names consistently escape us...

My vote would go to one thing. How many times has your song been covered by other artists?

What's the old saying? "Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery"...

Whenever I have heard an interview of a great songwriter one thing remained consistant.
They all said the songs just came to them, like they were channelled in. A few years ago on 60 minutes, Bob Dylan said this exact thing.
Some of the great songwriters of our time (or any) do not perform .
Some write great lyrics, some write great melodies. Some can do both.
Some write lyrics first, and then add a melody, some find the lyrics to the music they wrote.
Look at Elton John, and Bernie Taupen...John wrote the music, Bernie the lyrics.
Robert Hunter wrote many of the Lyrics for the Grateful Dead, but not the music.
John Prine is another great songwriter who rarely performs.
Man, we can go on and on.
The test of time I guess is what makes a good song great. Does it still sound fresh after 25 years?

I think it's someone who is able to come up unique concepts and ideas for the song, not to tread upon the same old stuff like "I love you" or "I used to love you" all the time. Or if writing about love, from a totally new angle.

A great song is a tune that moves and connects people in some way. People seem to think that if a song is commercially successful then that means it is no good. It actually just means that they don't like that style of music which by no means makes it bad.

If the latest teen sensation connects with kids and sells a million copies then that is a good song.

An artist like Raffi connects with millions of children because he writes songs that connect with them. Those are great songs.

What makes a songwriter great? having people who enjoy and want to listen. Eveything else is just opinion.

I don't think so. I've heard a lot of music from "teen sensations" that sell millions but still sound like they are churned out of the same uninspired, made-to-order song machines.

I knew someone would say that but that would be your opinion and not the judgement of whether or not the song is great. There are many people that write song after song that tops the charts with what you call uninspired made to order songs. that is not a fluke and if it were as easy to write those songs as people make it sound then we all would have written one.

At one point, someone could have said the same of teen sensations - The Beatles. And they did.

You can't disregard peoples' skills and abilities based on your own musical preference. Just because you don't like something doesn't make it bad.

I don't know I've heard a lot of crap that made it to #1 just because the artist has a pretty face or groovy dance moves

But again calling it crap is only your opinion. Looks and dance alone will not get you noticed otherwise every porn star would have an album.

It has always humored me that an artist will sell millions and someone will say that all those people are fools who don't know music. They just like something different than you.

I think the Macarena is dumb and yet people continue to jump up and dance to it. Why? Because it moves them, pleases them and makes them want to shake their ass. All decent elements of songwriting.

As Louis Armstrong answered when asked to define Jazz

Well said... commercial success does not a great song make.
