‘Banana Shpeel’ Date Has Slipped Again

Compiled by DAVE ITZKOFF
Published: February 12, 2010

Has the Allman Brothers Band put some sort of Southern-fried hex on the Canadian clowns of Cirque du Soleil? On Friday, Cirque du Soleil said that it would again delay the start of its coming show “Banana Shpeel” at the Beacon Theater — the same show that pushed the Allman band out of its longtime March residency at the Beacon. In a news release, representatives for “Banana Shpeel” said it would now begin preview performances on March 17; back in December the show moved its first performances to Feb. 25 from an original date of Feb. 4. The release said the latest delay had occurred because “the rehearsal period at the theater has been extended to integrate new performance elements.” An official opening date at the Beacon has not yet been announced. A Chicago production of “Banana Shpeel” was presented last year, and disapproving critics more or less tied it to the whipping post.

While amusing to think the Allman Brothers "voodoo" could somehow ruin this show, it is pretty damn obvious it sucks all by itself.

I'm loving every minute of this.

Even better knowing MSG sank $10 million into it.

I'm a HUGE fan of the ABB. It saddens me they ended in 1972.

Didn't Warren sing "I Put A Spell On You" at the Beacon on Mule Years Eve? Looks like the spell is working on the Circus of Bad Karma! (Their karma is so bad they don't need spells anyway.)

OK Lefty. You're a performer,so let me ask you some questions. Some people who post here say music isn't a competition and we shouldn't compare guitarists, singers, whoever.

Do you agree with that?

And as a performer, you wouldn't want to wish any "bad karma" on another performer.

Is that right?

So don't you think it's a bit silly and childish for people like Butch Trucks to make comments derogatory to another group of performing artists?

Why would a performing artist wish "bad karma" on another?

Wott a huge stretch here.

If I like the music of the ABB I shouldn't dislike another "performing artist" like David Blane or the Naked Cowboy?

Or Don Imus?

Sarah Bernhardt? (sp)

Kenny G?

Carrot Top?

Jay Leno?

NWA?

WCW?

MMA?

Shakespeare in the Park?

Spare me.

i don't really have a problem with Cirque, as i like their shows. I'm glad it's not working out too well for MSG though, as their greediness to make even MORE money has at least not been as easy as they thought.

Springer, I think you missed the point here.
I did not see any negativity on The Banana peel show in this thread. That was heaped upon the show by the critics, not the folks in this thread.
What I believe most of the folks here are pissed about is the Dolan's idea to replace the ABB Beacon run with this show. No one is willing the show to fail, they did that all on their own.
Looks like you got a different axe to grind and no one is taking the bait.

I just know that at some point in this thread you're going to call me a troll. Why don't you just get it out of the way now? You'll feel better about yourself.

Then Bob1945 can tell me to get a life and we'll all be happy!

Personally I feel we have been blessed for a long time with some great music played by a stellar line-up of musicians of the Allman Brothers Band over the years.

Yes, and I have stated that many times here..Music is art and it is subjective..comapring and giving opinions is one thing..saying something sucks or isn't real because you don't like it, is, In my opinion, , wrong.

And as a performer, you wouldn't want to wish any "bad karma" on another performer.

Is that right?
Also correct..people bring bad karma on themselves (been guilty of that in my life but have really tried to correct that)

So don't you think it's a bit silly and childish for people like Butch Trucks to make comments derogatory to another group of performing artists?

that wasn't in the above post at the start of this thread..I have not seen that ...I also know that when I hear "he said she said" things, I tend to react the same way every time. If I didn't see it or hear it, it is hearsay...sometimes two people can give honest desriptions of the same event they both witnessed and still be incorrect on the facts.

Why would a performing artist wish "bad karma" on another?

you would have to ask the ones that do..

I think the bad karma wishes have been directed at the Dolan's ..

It is what it is..I don't know many people that , having been the biggest success for a number of years at a certain venue, would not be hurt at being tossed aside for something that the landlord thought could make them more money.

Hold on. I've got to rotate the pins in my Jimmy Dolan doll. Now I've got to move him back from the woodstove because I've been holding his feet to the fire..
Now. What's going on in this thread?
Nevermind. I'm gonna go listen to Berry sing "Hoochie Coochie Man".

All the dude in the post is saying is that it's not good form to be happy about others' misfortunes. I agree with him...

While there's some vindication in the Dolans taking a hit for this fiasco, what about the low-level Cirque employees who will be taking financial hits because of this, or the young performers who wanted to use this Banana thing as their springboard to greater successes.

In their world, this is a catastrophe with serious implications, so it's a little harsh to sit back and laugh it off.

That's all he's saying; or, that's all he should be saying.

And, to hammer the point home, Candace Oakley, both the sister and the ex-wife of original ABB members, thinks the band should have ended after Berry died in '72.

Nobody here has as much insight into the band as she, and she feels that '72 should have been it. I personally disagree, but if someone who was so intimate with the band feels that way, such a notion should NOT be dismissed.

I've mostly avoided this Cirque thing because if the ABB isn't at the Beacon, I don't really care what IS there. But the blog post is pretty funny and I don't mind seeing the Dolans get their comeuppance for their crappy way of doing business.

Not really. She's entitled to her opinion and I can understand why she feels that way, but her opinion doesn't count more than anyone else's. Besides, saying the band SHOULD have gone their separate ways in 1972 is not the same thing as saying "the band stopped existing in 1972." The former at least makes sense, the old 'declaring the band doesn't exist anymore' trick is just played out.
