recently i was critical of some of the musicians in the ABB family, upsetting a few people. In fact,i referred to a musician as "talentless"--obviously a personal opinion rooted in my taste & obviously not fact, but mere opinion.

Are we allowed to be critical(or even brutally critical) of ABB family/related musicians & if so can one express strong negative opinions or are these folks sacred cows that can't be criticized or even insulted like some non ABB family/related bands/musicians have been?

Just curious how people feel about this issue?

Of course, you are "allowed", but since so many people here take criticism of their "favorites" as an intense personal attack, it gets nasty real quick. It would be nice if people could understand that "opinion" is not the same as "fact".

Just because I think you are a nattering nabob of negativism doesn't make you one. But you should respect that opinion, even if you don't agree.

I can think of a few family members that have been criticized heavily on this site but obviously one persons criticism is usually met w/ intense feedback.

Nothing wrong w/ having an opinion- too bad a negative opinion is rarely taken for what it's worth- an opinion.

I've seen plenty of posts on this site where folks have felt free to express differing opinions about things from music to politics (can you say 'whipping post'? ) to current ABB line-up v.s. former line-up(s) to posters who feel it is their personal duty to post judgements on the behaviours/lifestyles/whatever of current and former bandmates. And often brutally so. So I would say, yes ... it's ok to express an opinion here. (But I was once called a 'hoor' in another thread for expressing an opinion so what do I know - lol )

Often the feedback is triggered not so much by what you say, but how you say it.

This is a forum for FANS of the Allman Brothers Band and their members, both present and past. Certainly you can post any personal opinions you may have, both positive and negative. But a rational person would assume that the majority of opinions would be positive and supportive of the band. It just seems irrational that someone would come on a fan website, post something negative or derogative and not expect those opinions to be met with ridicule. It has nothing to do with your right to post a minority opinion. But it is a MINORITY opinion, perhaps even a minority of ONE. To whine about the responses to such posts makes as much sense as crying about your clothes getting wet after you've jumped into the deep water.

Exactly. Back up your opinion and try to explain.
Don't just say "So and So Sucks!" or "So and So is talentless" and leave at that.

I missed the "talentless" post. Has that thread or post been deleted? I know just about all the folks who've played with the ABB past and present as well as the related family. I can't think of anybody in that list that I would describe as "talentless" including periennal favorite, Mike Lawler. And ... dadof2 ... before you go, "I don't want to rehash." Well ... it would seem that's the whole purpose of this thread. Anyway ... without knowing the particulars ... If you call somebody here, either in the ABB or related "talentless," then you should expect somebody here won't agree with you. You aren't that naive. IMO the deeper reasoning behind posting on the internet in general IMO is to just a way to go, "Hey look at me." - an escape from the mundaneness of our own existence. Heck I know I've played devil's advocate more than once just to engage some "meaningful" discourse because that seems to be quite absent from my day-to-day life. I would imagine that some of the "trolls" we encounter here do so only for the sense of power it gives them which is sad.

Lots of personal insults and tasteless comments on the WP. You can find lots of
worthless and talentless people posting there.

dadof2, I know what you are saying. People will hate you if you say something against ABB in any form. It is a shame but that is the way it is. I have been there.

No, people won't hate you. They will post their opinion of your opinion and it will
most likely be critical of you. But, maybe you just wanted to start something anyway.

Anybody who posts here knows there are no firm rules. You can post what you like,
but then so can the folks who disagree with you.

This is a very good answer:

To whine about the responses to such posts makes as much sense as crying about your clothes
getting wet after you've jumped into the deep water.

Why should a negative post be met with ridicule? I have been to bad Allman shows, boring DTB shows and have seen poor or sloppy performances by different band members. Being a fan does mean I absolutely love everything every band does. If I am a true and loyal fan, I expect a sub-par performance or an off night. If this is an adult fan forum, we should be able to discuss pro and con opinions without ridicule.

dadof2 was not whining, just asking people what they thought of criticism of ABB family bands.

For the record I quoted the above poster because, IMO, it was a good answer.
I don't understand why Effie is still on this. But, that is his right.

dadof2 was not whining, just asking people what they thought of criticism of ABB family bands.

There was more to it than that and Effie knows it. Effie is trying to get people to agree with him and
make him feel that he was right. He deserved the whining comment. IMO, of course. That is what
this thread is about.
