Simple question, really... Who do you prefer, the Who or Zep?

I'm a "Who" guy myself, since I can't stand Robert Plant, and since I thought their work in the late-60's was as brilliant as any music ever created. Ever.

Who. Quadrophenia is the greatest concept album ever made. Daltrey's voice is unreal, Townshend is a great guitar player, Keith Moon was undoubtedly one fo the greatest drummers who ever lived, and the Ox - words can't describe how I feel about the Ox.

i was just discussing this with linniexx and its widely accepted that immigrant song is the first heavy metal song. but listening to dazed and confused last night on the radio, i thought why wouldnt dazed be considered heavy metal since it totally rocks. plus it precedes immigrant by 2 or 3 years. just a wondering

You know, I go back and forth. Both bands have done excellent songs....and lame songs....and potentially good songs. I love Quad, Next, Leeds ('cuz it thunders, a few lame songs, 'tho) as albums, and then odd tracks from other albums. I don't really like anything pre-Tommy. The Tommy thing back in '89 whenever was excellent on TV. Saw 'em at Shea back in...82?....on the It's Hard tour. Tired old men, but fun anyway.

Zep must be the band who does the most self-indulgent riff-rock. Some songs kick ass, some are too long and could've been arranged differently (IMO) to max the potential.

But II and IV are excellent as albums, and I like In Through the Out Door as an album quite a bit, 'tho none of my friends did. Noone here seems to have heard of it.

It's a hard question you ask....... If I had to ditch one of 'em it'd be the Who, 'cuz the good stuff (IMO) in relation to their total output (incl post-Moon) just isn't as prevalent as in the same relationship concerning Zep. Robert Plant can be really annoying at times, but their instrumental sections are really good, for the most part.

I'm too young by maybe 5-6 yrs to have really appreciated them in their heyday, being born in '64, so it was always catch-up for me, 'tho I of course heard them on the radio and had the odd album (see my post in the Music Conscious thread).

Hmmm, can I post this now....indecision....both Moon and Bonham inspired me so much on the drums....divided loyalties....anxiety....AAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!!

I'd also like to add that The Who was probably the superior live act compared to Zeppelin. Also part of my reasoning.

I absolutely love Zeppelin but if I had to pick one it would be The Who everyday of the week and twice on sunday ....

Zeppelin without a doubt. Considering they outsell the Who 5-1 on 1/3 of the releases. Speaks volumes for the material strength.

Definitely the Who, by a landslide, for me. Of course, I still LOVE Led Zeppelin. I'm just a Who fanatic. For many reasons... Of course, like Frank, I think Plant makes it harder for me to choose Zeppelin over anything. No offense to Robert, I'm just not into a lot of what he did vocally. Although some of it is great. And you can't deny that Zeppelin is a major major all time influence in music or anything. - Just a preference. In fact as big as the Who is, I think a LOT of people miss out on a lot of what they did. There were many style changes throughout time with them...

Mods or rockers? Zep's blues influences were (and are) obvious. For shear complexity in musical structure I'd probably give the nod to Led Zepplin. But Pete Townsend had a direction and spark that were unique to him.

So N'Sync is better than the Allmans, based on sales volume?

Of course record sales count. Notice how the record companies took the public to court this year when they thought we didn't buy enough albums from them? All kidding aside...

The Who rocks as well as anybody ever has, but I'm going with Led Zeppelin on this one. Mostly because I prefer Jimmy Page's blues and acoustic work. I will agree that Roger Daltrey is much cooler than Robert Plant. Surprisingly, it was Daltrey's fart on his new adventure show that really solidified this for me.

If your band could have Moonie or Bonzo, who would you choose? I think about this a lot and never come up with a definitive answer. I usually figure that if it was Bonzo I'd die in a fiery car accident, and if Keith well, who knows You'd probably have to keep either one in a cage until it was time to chain them to the drums. Just to be on the safe side...

I like Zep better, but Who is way cool.

I like them both but only for short periods of time. They start to grate at me if I try to listen too long, especially Plant's vocals

The difference is that the fan base for the Who and Zeppelin are the same. We aren't comparing apples and oranges. The sales numbers aren't important- it is the number of fans and their loyalty.

Besides I would never vote for a band that continued to tour two days after a founding member died. Not to mention the five farewell tours. Money hungry people who no longer believe in the band only the $$$ it brings in.

You know, I would have said Zep all the way till I saw the new Who DVD. Boy do they smoke. They just don't make bands like them anymore. I will still have to go with Zep though, only cause I dig their blues, and they made more great albums. But talent wise, both are equal at their peaks.

I agree. The Who At Royal Albert Hall is better than the new Zep DVD but I still have to give the nod to L/Z.
