I always enjoy your videos , Mike . Thanks as always . This was the first time I've heard "Egypt" . I'm sad to say it does nothing for me . Aimless " jams " are something I've never associated with the ABB . They've always had the ability to make one's hair stand on end while completely sober . The exact opposite of bands like Phish , The String Cheese Incident and well , you know the others that require the use of hallucinogens to be appeciated .
I've noticed in the last few years or so , Egypt is the answer given for : " Why haven't the guys written any new material since Hittin' The Note ? " I refuse to accept that this is the best they could come up with . If it is , I'll settle for the greatest hits + " Rockin' Horse " and " Woman Across The River " repertoire .

Sorry to hear that. I never found this jam to be "aimless" at all. In fact, I think it's one of their better instrumentals. I like it better than "Instrumental Illness". Both are written by Oteil Burbridge. I find "Egypt" to be one of those jams that allows the band to stretch out, and explore improvisation, which is what the band was founded on.
I video taped the first five versions they played, as well as one or two from 2006. Each performance has a unique quality, and style that separates it from the others.
I enjoy listening to it, but everyone has their own preferences. You can't go wrong with their greatest hits though. Enjoy!!

Instrumental Illness given as a comparison sets the bar quite low ! Relative to many of the others around here , my knowlege of the early days of the ABB is somewhat limited . However , the amount I do possess tells me that Illness or Egypt would have been cutting room sweepings . I do respect your opinion , and by all means , keep the vids coming . You provide a great service to the rest of us .

Cutting room sweepings?? LOL I guess it's fair to say you're not a fan of Oteil, which is the only comparison I was making between the two songs, being that Oteil wrote both.
Either way, on a technical level, Egypt and Illness are no simplistic jams my friend.
I have a pretty in depth knowledge of early, mid, and late ABB music. I can tell you that Hot "Lanta and Liz Reed are not necessarily in another league from Egypt or Illness.
The fact that Duane plays on those early ones doesn't really have much to do with anything as far as technical compositions go. Believe me when I tell you, as great as he was, Duane would have a thing or two to learn from both Warren and Derek. Not they are better musicians per se`, but that they are amazingly skilled, and masters of their craft. If he were alive today, he would take his hat off to both.
Berry Oakley would do the same when it comes to Oteil, as would Lamar Williams, David Goldflies, and Allen Woody. The current lineup of musicians is like a team of surgeons that perform surgery on stage in front of thousands. I think to suggest their jams are worthy of being on the cutting room floor is a bit harsh. No? I'm not sure what you'd be comparing them to if your knowledge of the earlier compositions is limited as you describe.
I think most musicians who perform anywhere near the level of musicianship these guys do would never describe those two songs as being worthy of the cutting room floor. I think most would admit that those two jams are like a wet dream, as they only wish they could write and perform music as professional, and technical as they are. That's just my opinion of course, but I think most fans would agree with that assessment.
I'm glad you like my videos though. That opinion redeems you. LOL

very good mike!! I love Egypt I heard for the first time in 2005 at saratoga,NY and Derek+ warren blew the roof off the place with it I wish they would play it more IT has the momentum builder of a liz reed/mtn jam but with a very different sound it is a masterpiece.Inst Illness took a while to grow on me but has started to make me a believer of it. |

Jessica certainly was the most commercially successful instrumental, and it's one hell of an incredible piece of music. It was dedicated to Django Rheinhardt.
Brothers & Sisters is still one of their best LP's.
Jessica is one of those songs people recognize whether they know ABB music or not.
I think we all know who to thank for that composition..... It put them on the charts at a time when instrumentals from rock bands were unheard of in the top 100 in America. It reached #65
To this day it's still an amazing accomplishment for any band to chart an instrumental that goes more than seven minutes. In 1973, it was unprecedented. ____________________ http://www.youtube.com/user/MyInnerEyeMike
