Good mornin' sweet family,

It may be cold and snowy in Raleighwood, but our hearts warmed up hugely reading the following news:

"Leon Russell

Tulsa Sound legend Leon Russell is planning to take the Grammys stage Sunday night, about after two weeks after undergoing surgery for a brain-fluid leak.

The Lawton-born singer/musician is set to perform with country group Zac Brown Band, which is nominated for best new artist, best country album and best country performance by a duo or group with vocals.

USA Today reports that Uncle Leon was at Grammy rehearsals with Zac Brown Band earlier this week. They were rehearsing “America the Beautiful,” Russell’s “Dixie Lullaby” and the band’s hit “Chicken Fried” (the song that earned them their best country performance nod) for a medley they will perform during the awards show.

Russell is set to play piano and provide vocals during the performance, which will mark his debut on the Grammy stage, according to USA Today.

“I’m tired, but otherwise OK; it’s a pretty quick recovery,” Russell told the publication. “I’m going to be in the background, and I don’t have to walk a red carpet.”

The Grammys will air live at 7 p.m. Sunday on CBS, and it will be a joy to see Uncle Leon playing at the show."

Whoo hooo!

Take care and know that you, and Leon, are loved,

Lana

Hi again sisters and brothers,

From the L.A. Times:

"In this era of award show proliferation, it's hard not to smirk at the "once-in-a-lifetime" advertising campaigns for shows such as the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards on CBS Sunday night. Beyoncé is up for 10 Grammys this year and you have to suspect that back at the home, the trophy room is the most cluttered corner -- well, except for the walk-in shoe closet.

Still, there is something about the scale, history and reach of the Grammys stage that stirs undeniable emotion in the artists who step on it for the first time. On Thursday, at rehearsals for the broadcast, that was clear in the voices of two artists, Zac Brown and Leon Russell, who are on opposite ends of their careers but will step into the spotlight together Sunday night to sing to the largest audience of their lives.

Brown is the 32-year-old leader of the Zac Brown Band, which is nominated in the prestigious best new artist category for its grits-and-guitar sound. Russell is the 67-year-old Oklahoma piano man who left a hospital bed last week and used a wheelchair to reach his keyboard on the Staples Center stage. "It's an honor," Russell said in a hushed voice backstage. "And it's one I never expected."

The acts were put together by Grammys executive producer Ken Ehrlich, who said despite the generational gap, their "music was born in the same barn." The haystack suits Brown's band, which aspires to be musical kin to the Charlie Daniels Band or the Allman Brothers; the group arrived for rehearsals in battered denim and belt buckles tested by their country-bear physiques, and sang their hit "Chicken Fried," an ode to America, its soldiers, cold beer and a mother's love.

"We never expected to be here," said Brown, whose wife is handling the band's show wardrobe and taking care of three daughters younger than 3. "It's a lot to take in. We're looking forward to the opportunity to show our musicianship." "

" By the end of his first Grammy adventure, Brown will have met bigger names than Russell but it's doubtful that any will make a bigger impression on him.

"Leon has got a presence about him, like Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson, that aura from a long, hard music life," Brown said. "There aren't very many people that have that. It's something to see." "

More love,

Lana

One more

From USA Today:

" Singer/guitarist Brown, a former restaurant owner, hands Grammy executive producer Ken Ehrlich his Southern Ground cookbook of family recipes. "The food is serious," says Brown, who has a farm in Georgia. "My grandmother was a canner. I've been in the kitchen my whole life."

The band is rehearsing America the Beautiful, Leon Russell's Dixie Lullaby and Chicken Fried, up for country duo/group. The group is also nominated for best new artist and country album.

Manager Bernard Cahill persuades Ehrlich to stretch their slot to 4 minutes, 45 seconds, but the band shaves off 15 seconds after another run-through.

Russell, sitting in on piano and vocals, will make his Grammy stage debut Sunday, roughly two weeks after surgery for a brain-fluid leak.

"I'm tired, but otherwise OK; it's a pretty quick recovery," he says, unfazed by the Grammy gig. "I'm going to be in the background, and I don't have to walk a red carpet."

The band is overjoyed to have the legendary singer/songwriter on their team. Cahill tells Ehrlich, who suggested Russell's inclusion, "Your vision is coming together!"

Beaming, Ehrlich says, "This works. It sounds great." "

xoxoxo,

Lana

Hey there sweet family,

More great news - Leon was able to perform at MusiCares 20th Annual Person of the Year award show honoring Neil Young last night. The full story is at:
http://showbiz411.blogs.thr.com/2010/01/30/neil-young-serenaded-by-elton-jt -dave-matthews-stars/

Concerning Leon the reporter wrote, "The outstanding moments included Elton John, Leon Russell, T Bone Burnett, Sheryl Crow and Neko Case on “Helpless.” This was especially poignant because Russell has been very ill of late. He and Elton have just laid down tracks for an album they are making quickly with Burnett. Later, all of them joined James Taylor for Young’s “Heart of Gold,” which Young and wife Peggy enjoyed so much they very sweetly rested their heads on each other’s shoulders."

Leon appears w/i the first 30 seconds of this clip:

Take care and know that you are loved,
Lana

Bless Leon ... he is such a treasure. Glad to hear he's recovering from his medical issues and out there making music. (Looking for him tonight on the Grammy's )

(And props to MusicCares for recognizing Neil Young!!! )
