Today, January 28, is the anniversary of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, which happened back in 1986. I still remember it vividly. I was in 7th grade at the time. I remember being in school during 4th period, and a teacher across the hall from the classroom I was in, came over and told us that the space shuttle exploded. We were all in shock. A couple of minutes later, an announcement came over the P.A. system stating that the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded after takeoff, and all seven people in the crew were killed. At the end of the day, the whole school observed a moment of silence as a tribute to the fallen astronauts. Where were you on that day when that tragedy took place?

Good q -- I think most people remember where they were on that day.

I was in 5th grade. I stayed home "sick" that day from school and watched it on TV from my grandma's house. My mom and grandma were in the kitchen, not watching the television, and of course they didn't believe me when I told them that it blew up. We were all dumbfounded.

In Macon GA in Ms Bell's tax class at Mercer. I went home after that, and was a wreck for a good solid week. Terrible day. Though I was not a fan, President Reagan's speech was one of the best ones I ever heard. Here it is:

Sophomore year in high school. Brought the whole school to a halt.

A biology teacher at my high school was in the teachers in space program. He had made the final three and knew Christa McAuliffe quite well as they went through the training rigors together. NASA called him directly and told him to leave as to not have a media deluge at a high school (I found that out much later, that teacher was in our church parish and he knew my Dad). I still remember seeing him in the hall as he was leaving and the look on his face.

Tampa FL, I was leaving for work and saw the space shuttle coming down. It was a very cold night the evening before and that morning the sky was clear as a bell

I was at work in Providence, RI. I always had WBRU on the radio and they announced it, and everyone's jaw just dropped. We were all just stunned.

I was in the Navy, 25 years old, aboard the USS O'Brien, somewhere in the middle of the Pacific or Indian Ocean.

Melbourne, Fla. It was a very cold (for Florida) day. I had just come out of the courthouse and heard on the radio that the shuttle was launching. Looked east and saw it. Looked normal for a little while and then the explosion. Sad day at the Space Coast. Shouldn't have happened. That was one of the coldest days and that caused the problem. "Rocket Scientists" should have known better.

I was at work in my Uncle's print shop, a customer came and told us about it. When I told the next person who came in the store they told me that was a bad joke, I wish it was.

Damn it James. You were stabbed on my 25th birthday....NOT cool.

I don't remember exactly where I was when I heard about it. Back then, I worked in the field and didn't have access to the news and stuff like I do now.

We were in our meeting room upstairs at the beer wholesaler. We were watching it while it blasted off. Very sad day.

I was working second shift at the time and was home taking care of my 16 month old son waiting for my wife to get home after work. Saw the whole thing live on tv and was stunned.

I was working at Lockheed in Marietta Ga. I remember going over to the main
factory building (where they build the C5-A) at Dobbins AFB. Lockheed was one
of the contractors for the shuttle and everyone was just stunned. Horrible day.

I still have a copy of the Atl paper from that day.

Went back to school later in life. Was walking through the student center when I heard about this ... noticed large groups congregating around the televisions and went over to check things out and started hearing the shocked exclamations from people.
