i would love to hear a cd of the Wanee Funk lineup rather than Lettuce--it's comparing the minor leaguers to the majors--after all,George Clinton,The Wailers,Ivan Neville,The Lee Boys, & The Funky Meters...WOW That's big time--personally Lettuce does little for me,but if you dig it,enjoy it!

Toots is good, although having seen most of the NYE Beacon Mule shows, the least interesting night was with Toots. Dave Mason is good & he's nice to see...but till the whole list comes out it's hard to conclude if it'll be worth listening live...or just sit back & listen to lots of Wanee music

Agreed, as I posted above: filet mignon versus veggies...

Well...The Wailers and Lee Boys aren't funk bands. George Clinton's "act" is kind of a freakshow. GC is, what? 70 years old??? I will take nothing away from George Porter Jr. He is one of my favorite musicians. But the Funky Meters are NOT The Meters of the early 70s.
Lettuce is a band at the TOP of their game. The funkiest band in the land at this time in history.
You boys don't know what the funk you're talking about

...All that said, this year's Wanee is one of the greatest lineups I've ever seen. If I didn't already have a flight to Jazzfest, I'd really be on the fence.

Thanks for the education. I am sorry I will miss out on the Lettuce experience.

Well, obviously everyone has a right to their opinion, but I find it kind of amusing that people consider Lettuce to not be in the same "league" as the Funky Meters..especially when you consider that Eric Krasno has played several gigs as a MEMBER of the Funky Meters! Besides that, George Porter has played with Krasno in a million other settings, including the all-star funk revue with Stax legend William Bell at the last Warren Haynes Christmas Jam.

And of course, Krasno and Deitch were recently recording at Derek's home studio, and Derek has told me to my face how much he loves playing with Lettuce and Soulive. Hittin' The Note's own Joe Bell told me the other day that Derek told him once that Eric Krasno is one of a handful of musicians who are ALWAYS welcome to sit in with him.

Then again, maybe you guys are right, and Derek Trucks and George Porter are wrong

Krasno is great. But lets not forget Alan Evans. He is one of the best organ players I have ever seen, an absolute animal. And Deitch is about as funky as a drummer can get.

Lettuce is SICK, definitely one of the funkiest bands in the land right now. Krasno played xmas jam w/ a few folks and he has gotten so much better in the past few years. Don't throw them under the bus just because you haven't heard much or any of their tunes. Give them a chance the next time they're around.

That being said, Mountain Jam's lineup doesn't compare to Wanee this year. I am a MULE fanatic, but Wanee is the easy choice if it's an option. For the money, I would have rather hit the Mule Jamaica gigs than the current Mountain Jam lineup. The Spirit of the Suwanee Music park is home as far as festivals go. IMO you couldn't find a better place on earth for a show!!!

I have seen Krasno with the Funky meters and he is a good guitar player. I have seen Krasno several times sitting in with the DTB and once again, I would say his guitar playing is good.

On the other hand, Bernie Williams and Kid Rock played with the ABB, but that does not put them in the same league as Derek or Warren.

So I guess it is a matter of opinion

One of the acts announced for Mt. Jam, The Avett Brothers, will be on the PBS show Austin City Limits tonight. At least in my viewing area. Check your local PBS station for viewing times. They sounded good in the preview I just saw. We'll see.....I just thought I'd mention it to anyone cruising the site today.
