JEFF BECK SET TO RELEASE FIRST STUDIO ALBUM IN SEVEN YEARS

For his first studio album in seven years, Grammy-winning guitarist Jeff Beck returns with Emotion & Commotion, an eclectic mix of tracks that find the guitar virtuoso accompanied by a handpicked cast of talented musicians, as well as several songs accompanied by a 64-piece orchestra.

Rhino unleashes the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's restless genius on Atco Records April 13.

Beck recorded Emotion & Commotion late last year at Sarm Studios in London with award-winning producers Steve Lipson and Trevor Horn. To create the album's diverse sound, Beck used a number of musicians, including appearances by frequent collaborators Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Jason Rebello (keyboards), and Tal Wilkenfeld (bass). The album also includes contributions from a trio of singers: Imelda May ("Lilac Wine"), Olivia Safe ("Elegy For Dunkirk"), and Grammy-winner Joss Stone ("I Put A Spell On You" and "There's No Other Me").

To complement the innovative tones he coaxes from his guitar, Beck recorded with a 64-piece orchestra on songs that range from Puccini's immortal aria "Nessun Dorma" and "Elegy For Dunkirk" from the film Atonement, to "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" from The Wizard Of Oz, and Jeff Buckley's interpretation of "Corpus Christi Carol."

Beck says the idea of pairing his guitar with an orchestra evolved from the version of Gustav Mahler's "Symphony No. 5" he recorded a few years ago. "It turned out amazingly well, but I didn't want to commit to an entire album of classical music. What appealed to me instead was the idea of bringing together these seemingly contradictory sounds on different kinds of non classical music."

In addition to the orchestral pieces, Emotion & Commotion showcases a number of original compositions. For "Hammerhead," Beck fires the rocker's opening salvo through his wah-wah pedal before falling into a deep groove carved out by the rhythm section and horn arrangement. At the opposite end of the sonic spectrum, the airy arrangement that elevates "Never Alone" provides a wide-angle soundscape for Beck's imagination to freely explore the high-flying melody.

Before launching a world tour to support Emotion & Commotion, Beck will unite with Eric Clapton in February for a series of exclusive shows in London, New York City, Toronto, and Montreal. The guitarists — both former members of the Yardbirds — will play separately before taking the stage to perform together.

After the shows with Clapton, Beck will play South Korea, Hong Kong, Australia, and Japan before returning to America for the U.S. leg of the tour starting mid-April, which includes an appearance at the New Orleans Jazz Festival on May 1.

For Beck, the new album and tour follows in the wake of a triumphant 2009 — his most successful year ever. Among the many highlights were a sold-out world tour; his second induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; the release of the platinum-selling Performing This Week... Live At Ronnie Scott's, which earned a Grammy nomination for "A Day In The Life;" and magnificent performances with his band at the 25th Anniversary Concert of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden.

Emotion & Commotion Track Listing

2. Hammerhead
3. Never Alone
4. Somewhere Over The Rainbow
5. I Put A Spell On You featuring Joss Stone
6. Serene
7. Lilac Wine featuring Imelda May

Here's the bad news - Tal Wilkenfeld is out of Beck's band.
Damn, I was finally hoping to see her in Toronto next month.
That Jeff....

I buy everything Jeff releases, and he is one of my faves, but it has been a while - maybe 20 years? "Guitar Shop"? - since any of his studio releases has really knocked me out. His "techno" experiments had some interesting noises but not much melody. I respect his willingness to push on and try new things, but "new" does not always equal "good" to my own very subjective ears.

Agreed, Jeff has sort of lost me with his instrumental electronica approach -- I liked Blow by Blow, Wired was more of the same, but after that...bought Guitar Shop when it came out but was disappointed.
Seems like Jeff has been really influenced by the Joe Satrianis, Steve Vais, John McLaughlin's early work etc -- that's great -- he is some player

Youre right Ed, he is quirky. Thank god his shows are downloadable or we would all be having withdrawl issues waiting for his new releases. But I will see him with Clapton in February and hopefully his tour for the new release will enable me to see him again. maybe now he might change his setlist!

PETER FRAMPTON TO RELEASE THANK YOU MR. CHURCHILL APRIL 27

Following his Grammy Award-winning instrumental album, 2006's Fingerprints, Peter Frampton returns this spring with Thank You Mr. Churchill (A&M/New Door/UMe) on April 27, his most personal collection to date.

The 11-song set, co-produced and co-engineered by Frampton, features the legendary guitarist at his most incisive lyrically as he tackles the battles that wage within us and the outside forces that rage around us. His searing guitar work flows over every song, setting the mood. Nowhere is this clearer than on Churchill's centerpiece, the evocative, two-part, eight-minute instrumental, "Suite: Liberté."

"This album is very autobiographical," Frampton says. "It starts with my birth, which I thank Mr. Churchill for bringing my father back from the Second World War."

Recorded at Frampton's home studio in Cincinnati, Churchill is deeply intimate, weaving tales of loss, love and redemption and the lessons learned along the way. Churchill also includes Frampton's reflective take on troubling world events, including the Wall Street bailout ("Restraint") and even the tragic case of Megumi Yokota, a Japanese girl kidnapped more than 30 years ago by South Korea ("Asleep At The Wheel").

Frampton wrote all the tracks on Churchill, penning many with longtime collaborator Gordon Kennedy. His co-producer/co-engineer, Chris Kimsey, was the engineer on Frampton's first solo record, 1972's Wind of Change. It marked the first time the two, who reunited via Facebook, have worked together in 30 years.

Co-engineer Don Gunn (Death Cab For Cutie) also contributes to Churchill. Guests include Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron, who also played on Fingerprints, and the legendary Funk Brothers, who appear on Frampton's Motown homage, "Invisible Man."

RANDALL BRAMBLETT TO RELEASE THE MEANTIME MARCH 9

On March 9 Blue Ceiling Records will release The Meantime, the beautiful new CD from Randall Bramblett. The new recording marks a departure for the highly acclaimed multi-instrumentalist who is best known for his contributions on saxophone with Steve Winwood, Traffic, Levon Helm, Sea Level (with Chuck Leavell), Gregg Allman, Widespread Panic and more.

The CD features 12 original tracks, including some of Bramblett's earliest songs such as "Sacred Harmony," "Witness For Love," and "One More Rose" as well as newer, unreleased compositions. A sultry blend of ambient folk, jazz, traditional piano and seductive vocals, the music on The Meantime is downright romantic and mesmerizing in the vein of Norah Jones or The Blue Nile.

Special guests include Andy Carlson (violin and viola), Cora Kuyvenhoven (cello), Adam McKnight (backing vocals on "Driving to Mongomery"), Betsy Franck (backing vocals on "In the Meantime"), Tom Ryan (baritone sax), and Kevin Hyde (trombone). DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS ANNOUNCE NEW TOUR DATES IN SUPPORT OF
THE BIG TO-DO DUE OUT MARCH 16 / FREE MP3 AVAILABLE

The Drive-By Truckers announce the first part of The Big To-Do tour, screenings of their documentary, The Secret To A Happy Ending, unveil the album cover for The Big To-Do and offer free MP3.

The Big To-Do is slated for release on March 16, 2010 on ATO Records. Leading up to the release the band will play some weekend runs before kicking off The Big To-Do tour with a two night stand in Atlanta and then heading to SXSW. More dates to be announced in the coming weeks.

DBT and ATO Records are offering up the first single, "This **** ing Job," from The Big To-Do for free: download.atorecords.com/dbt/this_fucking_job.mp3

The premiere screening of the DBT documentary, The Secret To A Happy Ending, is scheduled for February 5, 2010 at AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, MD. This is a film about the redemptive power of rock & roll; it's about the American South, where rock was born; it's about a band straddling the borders of rock, punk and country; it's about making art, making love and making a living; it's about the Drive-By Truckers. Director Barr Weissman, Patterson Hood, Mike Cooley and Brad Morgan will be on hand for a Q&A after the screening.

This is the seventh DBT album that has featured original artwork by Wes Freed. The band has a very special relationship with Wes, they never tell him what to draw and often give him no input at all, yet he always seems to find some subtext, often one they didn't know was there, that he brings out and runs with. That relationship has hit a new level on this album, as he basically illustrated every song. He honed in on the circus allusions of The Rock Show and how it all could be tied together in The Big To-Do. Look for more pieces to be unveiled in the weeks prior to release date.

John Hiatt: The Open Road

Looking at life through the rearview mirror was the inspiration for John Hiatt's brand new album, The Open Road, due out March 2 via New West Records. The legendary songwriter's 19th studio album is classic Hiatt, picking up the tempo and returning to rock following his previous critically acclaimed Same Old Man.

Backed by his touring band, (Kenny Blevins on drums, Patrick O'Hearn on bass and Doug Lancio on guitars), the songs are inspired by life on the road, without looking back. "All the other years, my songs are about coming home," Hiatt says.

Hiatt will take the new songs on the road beginning with a run of international dates with Lyle Lovett. Upon returning to the states, he will appear on the 3rd annual Cayamo Cruise, on which he's played since the first voyage. Tour dates in North America will follow in March, with stops in New York City on March 10 followed by Pittsburgh, DC and Annapolis, which is already sold out.

Hiatt has written songs covered by a multitude of artists in a wide variety of genres including Bob Dylan, Rosanne Cash, Willie Nelson, Jewel and Bonnie Raitt, who most famously recorded "Thing Called Love." On The Open Road he showcases both his lyrical and musical talent with his blues driven, rock songs including the title track and "Haulin'." Hiatt produced The Open Road himself after recording with his band in his garage-turned-studio.
