Man,

Must be something in the water around Aiken...

I watched Jimmy Webb performing "Wichita Lineman" on Austin City limits a few months ago and I almost cried. I did cry when I first heard Glen Campbell sing it when I was a kid. Went to the store and bought Glen's album and played that song over and over and over again...

One of my all time favorite songs too...

I was listening to Isaac Stern play Ave Maria the other night. Any rendition of this song is like a tranquilizer to me. Would like to have heard Duane give it a shot on slide.

On Sunday I watched a performance of Etta James & Dr. John from circa 1982 on PBS. They did a duet on I'd Rather Be Blind - Etta was even almost crying. I definitely was.

Lyrics

"When The Music's Not Forgotten"

Please come close, for I long for you to hear
Hear the sound
That will rid you of your fears
In a land, where no water can be found
In a place, where there is no fertile ground
Longing for, yearning not to be forgotten
In an age, when the music is forgotten
In an age, when the music is forgotten

In the truth (in the truth)
Speaks of great and mighty things
Teaching us (teaching us)
What the peace of heaven brings
We must give (we must give)
We must give to all the others to those in need (those in need)
Who we fear to call our brothers

Reaching out (reaching out)
So that we are not forgotten
In a time (in a time)
When the music is forgotten
In a time (in a time)
When the music is forgotten

If we stand on a hill and do not touch
How can we do good?
If we wash our hands with all our friends
Where change can really come
If we hide our fears and don't draw near
Have we really lived?
Or are we all just standing here
Hoping there is grace?

In a dream (in a dream)
That I had not long ago
Visions of (visions of)
In a city made of gold
And a sound (and a sound)
That I never heard before
Such a sound (such a sound)
Saturating to the core
Such a sound (such a sound)
One that cannot be forgotten

[x4]
In a time (in a time)
When the music's not forgotten

Patty Griffin has a wonderful new album out called "Downtown Church." It is Patty singing a collection of old gospel numbers in a modern style. The great Buddy Miller produces it, and he decided to record the album in an old church in Nashville. The Downtown Presbyterian Church on 5th ave. was built in the Egyptian Revival style in 1849, was a Civil wear hospital back in the day and has wonderful acoustics that got Miller's attention.

ON the album, Patty is backed, among others, by musicians such as the great fiddle player Stuart Duncan along with bassist Dennic Crouch and Jay bellerose on drums. All three are long time excellent musicians and all three were in the Alison Krauss-Robert Plant touring band. Singing with Patti on this album are Buddy and Julie Miller, Raul Malo, Jim Lauderdale, Shawn Colvin, Mike Farris, Regina and Ann McCrary and the amazing Emmylou Harris.

The album, due to be released in a week or so on the 26th, is both sweet and fun, with some Staple Singers guitar gospel in the mix. But the two songs that I am picking for the most beautiful songs heard lately include a wonderful rendition of Hank Williams' "House Of Gold," and Patti singing a song she wrote called "Little Fire" with Emmylou. You can listen to the song here;

Listen to "House of Gold" here until the 26th;

Here are two more nominations for the most beautiful songs I have heard lately. First is a favorite of mine from Shannon Whitworth called "No Expectations." You can listen to the song here,

Another beautiful song is "Sweet Becky At The Loom" by the group The Unwanted from their new album "Music From The Atlantic Fringe." Those with Irish roots will appreciate it. You can listen to the song here;

This is one of the shortest yet most beautiful things I've ever heard - a minute and a half!!!!

If you like The Band, consider what's served up here by the late Jay Bennett with Jeff Tweedy, putting melody and music to a Woody Guthrie lyric.

It's not a new song, but for me, without question, the most beautiful song (rock) ever is the Band's It Makes No Difference.

Padora.com surprised me the other day by playing Solomon Burke's version of that song. And, I hadn't listened to any version of the song in a while, so, the most beautiful song I've heard recently is, Solomon Burke -- It Makes No Difference.
