i realize people have their favorite players & bands & the influence of our subjective musical tastes are just that--personal opinion--no more no less.
& while many enjoyed the DTB,i always felt Derek is such a power house player that he really deserved the finest musicians around him who can equal his level of playing...so i'd be curious what people think would be a "dream" lineup for Derek...whether or not the band is even remotely a possibility doesn't matter--strictly for fun!

so here goes....

Derek-guitar
Susan-guitar/vocals
Tal Wilkenfeld-bass
Steve Jordan-drums
Doyle Bramhall-guitar/vocals
Leon Russell or Chuck Leavell-keys/vocals
Jay Collins-sax/horns
Howard Johnson-horns

or:

Derek-guitar
Susan-guitar/vocals
Zack Starkey-drums
Jack Cassady or Jack Bruce-bass
John Scofield-guitar
Rob Baracco-keys/vocals

Have fun!

Guitar: Derek
Vocals: Susan
Drums: Joe Russo or Jeff Sipe (or Carter Beauford if we could dream)
Bass: Dave Schools or Victor Wooten
Keys: Kofi (or Steve Winwood if we could dream)

I would go with the first lineup, but make it more lean- I dont think they need three guitar players with a solid keyboard and horn player. Couple of more possibilities and we are good to go.

Derek-guitar
Susan-guitar/vocals
Tal Wilkenfeld-bass
Steve Jordan or Dennis Chambers-drums
Chuck Leavell-keys/vocals
Ron Holloway or Jay Collins-sax/horns

After the MULE NYE show, I would consider Marc Quinones as a nice addition.

I'd vote for having Jimmy Herring, Oteil, Kofi, Yonrico and Derek give an instrumental tour a shot.

all a matter of personal taste, but for me Tal is more interesting to hear than Oteil.

Sure, why not Marc Quinones?
Soul Stew Horns (Mace, Kevin and Paul)

Oteil is a great bass player, but Tal is a monster (er monstress).

And the three Soul Stew horn players can't hold a candle to a single Collins or Holloway. Might as well get the Juke horns... the trumpet player is the best twirler in the music business.

Derek - guit
Susan - guit, vox
Ziggy Modeliste - drums
Oteil- bass
Kofi - keys, flute
Herbie Hancock - keys (you said we could dream, right?!)

That's it. Honestly, I'd be just as happy if all he did was add Susan to the "songlines" DTB band.
I really enjoy hearing Derek without another guitar player, and I don't always like the directions that Warren pushes Derek in. I get tired of the "every song must have the classic rock climactic solo that ends with the fast picking or the highest note on the fretboard" approach. That sounds harsh, but there can be a sameness to where Warren pushes a song in the ABB. Derek in the DTB does much less of that. I love the freedom he has as the sole guitarist in the DTB; I love the clarity of his sound there too. He can get lost in the wall of sound that the ABB serves up.

Because of that, I'm less inclined to vote for a prominent other guitarist.

Oteil is too much of a gentleman to make her carry her own case, just as I am sure Jeff Beck and Chick Corea did when she played for them.

Jim, I completely agree w/ the "classic rock finish" statements. could they please lay off those? too much man-balladness to it also w/ Warren...

I agree that Derek is a master at being lead and the only guitar. A dTb show is like nothing else I've been to. Sometimes his solos are so in depth and precise that it wears me out to even watch. It is a captivating experience like no other to get enveloped in that SG for an hour and a half or two. Easy on me, probably quite a mental workout for Derek.

This band has Susan in it, who also is at her best, front and center leading a band on guitar and vocals. Seeing Susan pop in for "The Weight" or "Anyday" at the end of a dTb is not an introduction to her. Also, she does not look totally comfortable in that setting.

This year, we have those 2 large forces adding more large forces to a power group. Just Oteil and Kofi alone are absolutely phenomenal at their crafts able to lead any band for long periods of a show. We've all sen that. Then, you add other members coming in whoever they may be.

Where does Derek fit into that? He can't take this band on a dTb ride because they that is not what appears to be configured. I foresee Susan out front singing most songs that are not instrumental as well as playing a lot of rhytm and lead guitar (because that's what she does and her name is in the band).

If you see the Crossroads DVD Anyday recording, you see Derek smiling at Susan, playing off her vocals, then ripping short and sweet slide solos that make you run for cover. That is a fun Derek to see. Clapton the same way. Clapton would be singing, leading, or playing rhythm and Derek is there looking like a slingshot being pulled back and held at full throttle. Once that space opens up or the band breaks, you get Duane a la Derek taking the paint off the walls. That is a special thing.

If I had a choice, I'd see 2 sets, a little longer show, and lots of talented musicians showing off their myriad of skills. I really can't wait for this. They need to schedule shows before April!

The vocal versatility of Mike Mattison is definitely included in my version of a dream team.

nice to see all these perspectives--a reflection of Derek's greatness that there's so much creative possibility & people that he can select....& we all got our strong opinions...but,that's cool cause the music & what aspects we love must hit each of us hard...& that must be some kick ass vibe comin' off Derek to have that happen...i guess i was curious to see if people would select musicians outside of Derek's existing circles so it's interesting that Mattison,Oteil,Kofi would come up in a Dream band--but,we all got our opinions & that's good.....

Jim--great point on the big ending for each song's solo--& i never thought of it when i referred to John Scofield as a 2nd guitarist, focusing more on genre & style...keeping your thought in mind i guess i shoulda stuck with my first dream band

I really just want to see Derek/Susan play with brand new people. Maybe even people we would never expect them to play with.

Nobody is mentioning that photo that cropped up of a group of players that were rehearsing at Derek's place. The line up was Derek/Susan of course, Oteil Eric Krasno and Adam Deitch from the soulive/lettuce crew and I believe kofi. Now Derek in the past has mentioned working on a project that sounded like sly stone or delany and bonnie. I can't think of a better drummer or second guitarist to make that a reality than Krasno/Deitch. When you throw Oteil's funk chops in the mix you get something pretty incredible. I think we'll be seeing some very techinical soul music if that's a way to describe it. I think that photo was the lineup we are going to see.

If I had to make a realistic "Dream Band"... that photo with Krasno and Deitch would definitely be it.

Maybe Ryan Zoidis on saxophone too.
