Plus Conan is the only one to have Gov't Mule on multiple times.

People of Earth:

In the last few days, I've been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I've been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I've been absurdly lucky. That said, I've been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn't the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn't matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it's always been that way.

Yours,

Conan

the whole thing was handled poorly by NBC. No wonder why they're the 4th network.

I would change it to screw NBC.
Leno is as much a bystander in this as Conan

I agree with Stormy. That letter shows how much class Conan has. Whether you think he's funny or not, he's a stand up individual.

Never been a fan of Conan but I respect him for standing by his principles. I believe he respects the legacy of The Tonight Show by his stance and sticking up for that as much as himself. Leno is an innocent bystander in this, and if he has as much class as Conan he would tell NBC to stick it also. This is NBC's screw up, not Conan's or Jay's.

That's definitely a class act letter and my opinion of Conan just went up several notches. Thank you for posting that.

Put him on Fox at 11:30pm or move up the Daily Show and Colbert Report an hour and have Conan on at 11pm on Comedy Central.

Fox or cable can loosen up the comedic constraints he's been suffering in the earlier slot since the move.

Screw NBC.

Don't start talking about messing with the Daily Show and Colbert.....that's going a little overboard there.

I have always loved Conan, but I haven't watched one episode of him on the Tonight show.

Letterman hasn't been Letterman since he left NBC. Just not the same, almost a parody of himself.

Jay has never been funny to me, in fact I thought he sucked. But your average American seemed to like him, therefore NBC was stupid for moving him in the first place.

I watch Letterman but if I had to choose one or the other I'd pick Conan over Leno. I've tried watching Leno and I just don't connect. Conan is alright and has some cool musical guests. Nobody will ever be as good as Johnny Carson was at that type of show though IMO.

Leno is beyond passe' right now. I'd walk as well if I were Conan. Plus, he had to go tame on the 11:30 NBC timeslot as it was. Fox will let him get back to the goofiness. Bring back Shotgun-toting NASCAR Jesus, Cloppy the Late Night Horse, screaming raccoon in a jetpack, the robot alligator with gaydar and an uncensored Triumph The Insult Comic Dog.

in a world full of me-first phonies, Conan is rock solid - good for him.

Jay just needs to go away and drive his cars - he had a good run.

30 Rock is in trouble with this one, I think. Conan's had the tradition of having really good musical acts (although I have not seen him in the new time slot) and I've always appreciated that. Be cool to see what Fox could offer.

Eff Leno. Maybe this is karma for him stealing the Tonight Show in the first place.

Letterman should have replaced Carson, period.

Yeah, I agree with that, my own damn self. Dave was a regular guest host and I think Carson probably would have preferred that choice himself.

We get Conan over here in the UK.. have to stay up late and the shows are repeats obviously.. but hes's had some fab music on his show.. Susan, Derek , ABB ,Mule.. you dont get that calibre of music on British chat shows!
The thing I've never understood about US chat shows is why they have a "stooge" for the host? What's that all about?

Leno's TV audio mix for bands other than the Kevin band pretty much suck all the time.

WTF? How did he do that? NBC offered him the job and he took it. He would have been an idiot to turn it down.

Ever see the HBO Movie The Late Shift? I've never looked at Leno the same after that, bought the book after watching it, my opinion didn't improve. Leno and his manager slimed their way into the Tonight Show.
