Seems like they could still keep Great Southern together if they were so inclined. IMHO that is what they should do.

Someones opinion is never a bad thing, and it just might be spot on.
Unlike those who go through life as a faux person, living on the laurals of others.

duane has a big problem because if his name wasnt Betts my guess is he would be playing at dive bars around the country with nobody knowing who he was and struggling to make a living.....he is a run of the mill guitarist at best....that said,he seems like a nice kid and i wish him well

I completely disagree, he has come a long long way in the last 2-3 years, saw Great Southern last March and Duane played absolutely fantastic.

Ok, Dickey retired but that doesn't make him a QUITTER or a LOSER.

Dickey didn't finish SECOND.

Dickey didn't give up the ghost.

Dickey isn't LESS OF A MAN because he decided to RETIRE.

So is Dickey suppossed to be decrepit and worn out now?

Is Gregg suppossed to be twice the man, thrice the man, ALLMAN?

The road doesn't go on FOREVER and Gregg will be too old to wanna rock and roll someday.

Gregg will probably want to stay on the road though.
It's not as if the man has a LOVING WIFE waiting at home.
The road is HOME for Gregg Allman.

Playing music is probably the only thing Gregg really cares about.

Perhaps Dickey Betts has a LIFE outside of being on the road.

Maybe Dickey won't be sitting home ALONE without a MATE when he is at home.

Oh well, Gregg still has that little poodle doesn't he?

And DUANE BETTS will be okay too.

[Edited on 1/2/2010 by DEAN_]

Still a horse's ass in 2010 I see.

I believe the dog died.

This was about DUANE BETTS, not Gregg.

Save the hate for another thread.

he had a stint w/ Puddle of Mud and it would be my guess that his name had nothing to do with it

There was some talk that Duane and Pedro may be forming a new band called Pioneers of the New South. There is video of them playing a couple of new tunes that they wrote. One a Duane penned tune called "Paradise" that was quite good. As far as Duane's ability as a player ... that is something that I think will continue to grow. Two cases in point of folks going from point A to point B in a remarkably short time and ... right before our eyes ... are Derek Trucks and Luther Dickinson. There are a lot of factors that determine greatness of which heredity and attitude are definately a part of. Duane certainly has both mix that with a good amount of determination and I think he'll be OK and accomplish a good deal on his own. I certainly wish him well and no bad vibes.

That's comforting to know.

Dean the only thing that anybody here can derive from your posts is that you are a hate filled **** who does nothing but stir up sh*t and bring bad vibes. I can't think of anything nice to say about you. Your BS evidently has gotten under the skin of the Lefthander, one of the nicest and positvie cats here. Sure Gregg has done his share of bad behavior, but his positive side i.e. his voice, music and playing have made tons of people happy and far outweigh any of the bad which "some" folks tend to forgive and forget. Now just what have you ever done here that was positive? How many times have you been banned because you are a psycho? And do you even know how many monikers you've used to spew hate, bad vibes and BS here? Again Bro you need help. Probably the best place to find it may be your local DSS ... not a rock band's website.

What about yourself Lefty? You ROCK. Are you also a SCUMBAG or
do you TAKE THE HIGH ROAD like perhaps the way Derek Trucks has.

I may not care for Derek's music but the man doesn't live like a LOW LIFE.

no dean..i have made a boatload of mistakes in my life and I am responsible for every one of them..

I react badly sometimes..but i don't gauge my life off what Gregg Allman or Derek Trucks do...

it's none of my business how they live thier life..they, like you and I, will answer for what we have done..

but i try to choose to be positive wherever I can..
and i know it isn't always easy..

But this place (HTW) was created by two people that had love, brotherhood and community in mind. I am blessed to know thse people and call them friends..

they ask repeatedly that we be kind to each other while on these boards...

it is a choice...

try it..you might like it

Back on topic....

Maybe the improvement we've seen/heard in Duane's playing in GS is because he has had stage time, and nothing will polish your chops like stage time. Also, you can't help but be motivated to play better when you are hanging/playing with Pedro Arevalo. The man is ALL about the music and he has taken a shine to Duane. They are brothers of the road and stage. All the cats in GS have chops galore and will find work/gigs/band situations that will be as fullfilling to them as GS. I wish Dickey, Duane and all the GS band members well in 2010. Great bunch of cats and great players, all of 'em.

I'd like to see an Allmans offspring band...even if just for an album and a tour...or just a tour...since most of the ideas I have are never original (I'm always late or coming in second)...they've probably already done this without my knowledge. Derek, Duane, Berry Oakley, Jr...Devon..who else? I don't know who else has kids or nephews.
Don't forget Vaylor.

I was at the last performance here in NYC a few weeks ago and Duane was the same limited presence that he has always been....I do not rule out the possibility that he will improve over time but as of now he is a pretty nondescript performer of whom nobody here would be writing if his last name wasnt betts ...no disrespect meant, just the way i see it!

Great post BD. Great Southern has some killer players. I mean Andy Aledort, the best guitar instructor in the US today who can bring it his own style as well??? Pedro??? Hey I've always liked Mike Koch. Not to mention there have been some pretty fine players to pass through the ranks as well DDT, Mark Maye. I would assume that Duane has taken the opportunity to pick up a little on the bus ride. Then again there is Duane's father ... the man in the hat ... Dickey Betts ... certainly one of the all time greats. I believe it was Guitar World when talking about Jimmy Page said, "Whether or not he plays another [sic] note his place in the pantheon of all time greats is cemented." Same can be said of the great Dickey Betts.

As for his last name ... what would y'all do??? I do know of one of Dickey's other kids who can sing, but says living up to the family name is too hard to want to persue that profession. So while I may not totally disagree with you Jon Branch ... it does seem that you take every opportunity to mention:

You clearly do care to make those comments. I actually don't care because it's not my life and provided they don't have any negative impact on me or people I care about, who am I to judge anyone's lifestyle. Sometimes I party like a rock star. Sometimes I sit on the couch and read a good book. Both will likely catch up to me at some point.

Hope everyone has a good time while they're here, leaves good tracks in the road and kicks up some dust.

No Dean, the little poodle, Dawn, was run over by a car and died last year.

Don't forget Vaylor.
And Michael Allman.

WELL SAID.

I don't understand why some of y'all have to be so mean-spirited towards Duane Betts.
I've seen him with Dickey and he plays well and has a certain stage presence. I saw the way he treated his father
and that tells me he is a good man. Give him a chance please. He doesn't have to be a big star.
