somehow this was not a surprise to me.........I see Derek as an artist in the purist sense.......a husband and father of two.

his need to continue to evolve > change and go forward like other jazz artists before him is essential to his pure spirit in my mind.

I am very excited to see "what he does". Who will be in his band? I wonder if his brother will play the drums? He has been on the scene and I would guess getting better at beating the buckets and trash can liids.........so?

my hat is off to him for making it happen and keeping it fresh........the DTB, ABB, Clapton Band.......wow.

go Derek go.

I will never forget seeing them perform for the first time = winter of 1999?? in San Francisco at The War Memorial opening for Steve Kimock's band Zero.

I was at that show also. I remember Derek sitting in with Zero on The Weight and maybe a couple of other songs.

I'm really interested to see who is in the new band. I heard Oteil and Kofi are in. I'm really hoping Derek gets Steve Jordan to play. He's a phenomenal drummer.

looks liike this topic has the crickets........oh well.

this is about a new beginning......if Oteil and Kofi are "in" then my hope for the jazzzzz element is looking good.

the new drummer will be the reeeely big "shoe" though........he needs a Mitch Mitchell or Mike Shreve type IMHO.

and we know they will hit the road and the studio.

I think it's more that this topic has been discussed! Of course the sky is the limit with Derek. He has great chops and the ability to play many styles; he has worked hard to get name recognition and his own studio; he has his head together.

If the question is "what do I hope he does?" Jeez, what I want from Derek is this: MORE. Everything he has touched has sounded good to me.

Any rumors as to what Yonrico and Todd's plans are now that they've been replaced? Just curious. They'll certainly land on their feet as they're too good not to. Still, I feel for them.

I don't think they've "been replaced" per se. I think the Derek Trucks Band will ride again. When, I'm not sure even Derek knows, but he did approve calling it a 2010 Hiatus.

If Oteil, Kofi & Susan end up playing with Derek during this hiatus, I hope the rest of the musicians are guys outside his normal circle to help push the envelope. Hightly doubt there would be another guitarist but that could be cool too.

As for another guitarist, I really enjoy the clarity and freedom Derek's singular guitar has in DTB. Sometimes his guit gets lost in the ABB wall of sound.

If there's to be another, though, let it be Jimmy Herring!

Yup. But I think there may be another still... We'll see.

I'm afraid the Doyle-haters Club is going to be very disappointed.

Let's shoot for Rodney Holmes. If there's anyone better out there, I've never heard of him. Rodney rules!!!

As with most "haters", that club can take a hike. Sure, the guy isn't the next SRV, but who gives a damn? He grew up with the blues and can play 'em fine by me. How is this dude good enough for EC and DT but not for the haters?

When dudes like Derek and Eric want him in their bands and involved with their albums, I try even harder to "get it", but with Doyle, I just can't get it. I suppose his songwriting is fine, but I'm not turned on by his voice or his guitar work.

I was listening to The Steve Kimock Band "Live in Colorado" just yesterday.......it has a style and a very very deep groove and yes Mr. Rodney Holmes is part of this sound.

I agree completely - Rodney would be out of the box and perhaps a great fit. He is just the type I was thinking of > a very schooled, creative and still loose type of player/drummer.

Hot 'Lanta Tim hit it on the head too........ths is not replacement at all........this is "going forward" in my mind at least.

what about Brother Duane if this is a family thing?

oh I must say the reason I am bringing all of this up "late" is because I just found out about all of this!!!!

so........I have been pathetically unaware and just catching up with thoughts and opinions.

I still think this is very very exciting.
