I was hoping it wasn't true, but it is. I received a letter today from the Count Basie Theatre, in Red Bank, NJ, notifying me the March 11 show has been canceled.

I'm all for retirement, don't get me wrong...but why TF would you book a tour, sell tickets, and THEN decide to retire?

I know...because you're Dickey Betts. Always erratic and not quite dependable.

*sigh*

Ever get unexpected news?

You never know what came up whether health related or whatever, some things you just can't plan.

Dickey canceled a show on me a few years ago at the last minute. If you see him, he owes me $25!

I'm sorry to hear that. As the saying goes, that's show business.

Usually when something like this happens ... there is a reason. I'm sure he wasn't planning on retiring when he booked the tour.

what did you have to edit? Spell your insult incorrectly?

The undependable Dickey Betts was the glue that kept the 1972-73 band togethor and at their commercial peak.

At 66, maybe something you are not privvy to drove it to a mid point decision. Maybe a light came on in his head that the road can kill, maybe he just wanted to. Your selfish desire for entertainment fullfillment over the wellbeing of any other human is very nice.

undependable...................... nice...............................

Lighten up, Bird.

No one - especially Laura - is taking anything away from his contributions. There have been lots of 'Axl Rose' incidents with Dickey in the recent past, so yeah... erratic and undependable is not too harsh a criticism. No one here wants anything but a smoking Dickey show every time, but that just don't happen.

It doesn't happen with anyone. They all are human and they ALL have bad nights.

Gregg's show at the Tabernacle in Atlanta on New Year's Day 2000 was one of the poorest shows I've ever been to. One of less than a handful of shows I've ever walked out of. He should've faxed it in.

I feel your pain, Dickey was to play in Westbury.

Dickey have a great retirement, I will miss your great shows.

I'm as big a Dickey fan as there is, but I agree that it's lame to book a tour, sell tickets, then retire mid-way through and cancel everything.

It's not as if he never thought about retiring before - at his age, it had to have slipped his mind. If it's been floating around his brain for a while, he should have scaled back this tour, or announced his retirement before hand and had it be his farewell tour.

Something definitely had to happen for him to just retire on the spot like that.

Something caused him to walk away from this tour. Hopefully its just time to put his feet up and watch.

I really wouldn't call the March dates a tour, it was a handful of shows just like the one he just finished.

It seems he could have just played them...but obviously something caused him to do so

Dickey has just turned 66 on 12/12.... and he has been running the road for over 40 years... It 's time for a little R & R .... perhaps, the road will call and pull at his heart strings which are attached to his guitar strings and he will once again hit the road to make all his fans have Blue Sky days once again... I will be there...

You deserve a break. After riding for so long and being hung up wet, it's your time to relax. How little is known by the experts on your contributions to the music industry. Hopefully, one day it will come to light. Could be a good time to write a book.

Plus, I'm waiting on you to go fishing with me on Lake Kissimmee.

Like most other folks here,I seriously doubt that this was a "planned" retirement or these dates would not have been booked.Whether that is the case or not,I'm quite sure Dickey has made the correct decision for himself.I only hope that he is physically well & just felt it time for a break...hopefully we'll see him soon....

No matter what is posted someone gets upset. Some things never change.

Why are some people so personally offended when someone has a different opinion of their heroes?

I love the man's music, but I can also see the disappointment in having a show cancelled. It's no reason for the call to arms in defense of one side or another.

Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas.

Just hope it's not health related. Otherwise, the man has put in his time and he deserves to do whatever he pleases. I wish him well whatever he does.

If he does decide to come back & play a few shows i would
love some acoustic shows. I hope he enjoys his well earned
time off.

Axel Rose..cuts us a break..I don't remember any riots or people burning cars like they did in Montreal or Dickey jumping in the audiance to attack a fan taking pictures..You will get your money back dude.. Don't you think this had to be a hard decisionon on his part to call it a day after more than 40 years of being on the road?
Ed

In New York City, a place where Dickey Betts had had many great achievements, he played what will possibly become his last touring date on December 12, his 66th birthday.

"Im not retiring from playing. Im sure there will be some great special events that Ill be at in the future. But for now, I look forward to waking up tomorrow with nothing on my schedule."

After more than 40 years of constant touring its time for a well deserved break. Stay tuned for updates on the Great Southern Band members and their associated projects, as well as updates on Dickey himself.

Happy Holidays to all
