over on Dickey's site:

In New York City, a place where Dickey Betts had had many great achievements, he played what will possibly become his last touring date on December 12, his 66th birthday.

"Im not retiring from playing. Im sure there will be some great special events that Ill be at in the future. But for now, I look forward to waking up tomorrow with nothing on my schedule."

After more than 40 years of constant touring its time for a well deserved break. Stay tuned for updates on the Great Southern Band members and their associated projects, as well as updates on Dickey himself.

Happy Holidays to all

Wishing the best for Dickey and all the other Great Southerners. I don't think this will be the last we hear from any of these guys.

Let's face it folks. These guys are nearing, or at, retirement age. I don't blame him for wanting to take a break. When I am 66, I hope I can announce my retirement.

God bless Dickey Betts. All the guys in Great Southern have other musical pursuits and will all land on their feet. If and when DB&GS announce future dates from this point, you had better get your tickets right away. They will no doubt go fast.

Wow, I am glad I went to the Greenville show. I surely wish Dickey the best. Thinking about heading down to Sarasota this summer, maybe we can hook up and go fishing........lol.

Hey, get it while the getting is good. ABB is not done. dTb is just on hiatus. I expect there will be more opportunities to see Dickey. Just got to be patient, and most likely, willing to travel.

No doubt - that announcement says nothing about quitting playing.

I guess he is going to cancel his March dates, I was really looking forward to the Dickey/Dave Mason 3/12 show at Westbury.

I just wish I had more time to get out and hear some music! Seems like I am missing some of my last chances to hear some of my fav. bands.

Missed the birthday show, I thought Dickey was coming to Long Island in March.

Thanks for the great music on the road, enjoy your retirement...

God love Dickey Betts. After 40 years on the road, he deserves some rest.

All the best to the GS musicians including Duane Betts.
I see Pedro has a new band. Good for him.

Wow. I agree with what Dave said but still sad none the less.

I'm so glad I saw him in Buffalo on the 9th. It was a great show too. Very high energy and intense jamming.

I just drove to Albany on Sunday to see the last DTB (as we have known it) before the "haitus". I briefly spoke with Rico before the show as he strolled through the atrium and he did not look like a happy man. Very soft spoken and sullen.

That was a great show too with high intensity. No Susan, no guests, just straight up DTB. They even played two sets with an intermission, which is not typical of more recent years of DTB shows.

Rico began to speak at the onset of the encore something about "After 16 years....", then Derek walked over to him, with his back to the crowd, shook his head in a side-to-side "no" fashion, said something no one could see or hear, then Rico just said "Yeah" and began to pound out the intro to "Anyday". And it was a long, blistering Anyday like I've never heard it before and they kept it going and going as if they didn't want it to end. At the close of the show Rico handed out a larger than normal stack of setlists. I was fortunate enough to get one, but he again was very sullen and would not shake anyone's hand or utter a word. The artwork depicted what is presumably "the" fat lady singing with the text Derek Trucks and the word band halfway in (or out depending on how you look at it) her mouth. You can read into that what you will.

It has to be depressing for Todd and Rico who have seen the band grow from playing seedy clubs, to nicer theaters, and now have to basically go back to small club work indefinitely.

I went to Albany at the last minute due to all the recent good press and the fact I knew it was the last show.

I never saw this coming (yet) with Dickey. Even though it was a local show and I would have gone anyway cuz it's Dickey, it is now bittersweet knowing it was near to his last show.
