What exactly is that "70's sound"?

From what I remember about the 70's (with all the brain cells that I killed, it probably ain't much!), there were bluesy bands like the Allman Brother's Band, prog-rock bands like Emerson, Lake and Palmer and Yes, glam-rock bands like Bowie and Mott the Hoople and fusion bands like the Dixie Dreggs and Weather Report and even country-rock bands like Marshall Tucker and the New Riders of the purple Sage.

Aaah, the 70's! When men were men, women were lesbians and a quality bag of good smoke only cost $15!

Seems like ticket prices now are hand in hand with a bag o smoke.

First group that came to my mind as well. I really like those guys.

Chris Robinson's New Earth Mud album really had that feel too, IMO. I really enjoyed their set when they opened for the ABB.

Liked New Earth Mud at that show also. Wasn't real familar with the Black Crows but this band was very good.

Collective Soul did early on.

now they are just too poppy,

seemed to happen after Ross Childress left the group.

that 70's sound in a nutshell is Monster Players and singers, the sound was what it was beause of the imagination of some great musicians sadly except for a few bright shining stars like Gov't mule, the music era of today lacks any imagination and is ruled by technology... The players from the 60's and 70's were the best i do not think we will ever see such a magnitude of great players...

I'd rather not have bands trying to sound just like the 1970s bands per se; there's no need for sound-alikes. I'd be happy with bands that have as much spirit and soul, and those bands CAN be found, just usually not on the corporate FM stations.

Another "new" one: "Dirty Sweet". Cool band with a very nice debut CD.

Back Door Slam (now Davey Knowels & Back Door Slam)

I agree w/ New Earth Mud mentioned previously as well.
however they are n o longer a band (unfortunately)
same goes for the defunct Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies.

One band for me that comes to mind is Black Stone Cherry. Both of their albums are great. I haven't seen them live yet, but I've heard that they kick butt live!! Hope they continue to make more great music.

There's a band here in Chicago called Steepwater that is very much in that vein....we've played with them a bunch as has Lefty....which I guess would pretty much lump my band in this category as well.

Heard a great jam by the band Jack **** on Sirius radio the other day -- 10-15 min hard rock jam w/real tasty retro like guitar playing

It's Jacksh!t -- at least according to what the radio said on the display...
