and once again I'm reminded of why I hate Cancer. I just heard from a high school friend that his sister, Kathy, has lost her last battle with cancer. Bob was in my class and Kathy was in my sister's class during our school years. Their brother Bill played bass in the band Montrose so they made fans of all of us before we knew much about this West Coast band here in Middle Earth when these Westies moved to our area of the country and they opened our lives to many more things... like wonderful life-long friendships. Kathy had a tremendous fighting spirit - had battled thyroid and breast cancer and won those wars. But the disease was not to let her be and after many years of being cancer free it returned to haunt her, this time in her bones and in her brain and she had a quick but terrible last encounter with this evil scourge. So now she is free from pain and no longer weary from a struggle that is all consuming but she leaves a son who lost his mother much too soon, a family that loved her dearly, and a far reaching web of friends who cherished her Kathy-ness. In my office I have a 'happy place' - a wall dedicated to pictures of people and places that can bring me peace and a smile when the work gets to be too much. And on this wall is a picture that was taken after a day long hike in Yosemite - following the blazes, off the beaten path, our ragged group of friends and family came to a huge boulder, high up, hanging over the Yosemite valley. It was magnificent and awe-inspiring. My cousin stands there staring off into the wilderness, my sister sits with feet dangling over the boulder mesmorized by the magesty of that valley below and El Capitan in the distance, and Kathy is lying on her belly on the boulder, head hanging over to see the valley below, feet kicking, chattering away. And that's how I'll think of her - of the joy she infused our lives with.

Godspeed Kathy - rest peacefully. If folks that read this could pass along a wish or prayer for comfort and healing to her family, and especially her son, it would be so much appreciated.

Cancer took the life of my father in law on Saturday as well. So sad. I have had at least 15 friends and family die from cancer in 5 years. Very very sad.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My sister Lisa passed away December 1st after a six year battle with breast cancer. She had beaten it for a year or so when in returned in her liver and collar bone about 4 years ago. She had been on and off Chemo ever since. We received word this past Halloween weekend that after all this time fighting the spots on her liver and in her collar bone, that the cancer had spread to her lungs. About five weeks later, she was gone. In the end it was a blessing as she could barely breathe and was in excruciating pain. She was 45 years old and left behind a husband and two sons. One a sophomore in college, and the other a junior in high school. Far too young to lose your mother. I spent some time with her this past summer in the Adirondacks on beautiful 4th Lake. Except for having no hair, you never would have thought she was ill. Still the same positive, bubbly, spunky sister I've always known and loved. 3 1/2 months later, she's gone. Cancer really sucks.

My thoughts are with all of you here who know this story only too well... who also carry that heaviness in your hearts from the pain of losing your loved ones or living with their suffering and the feeling of helplessness that brings. Chaiin and CM and Dave and Gritzman and all who know this story personally - my thoughts go out for comfort to surround you and for the sweet memories of times shared to fill up those places in your hearts that carry hurt. I can't let go of this dream I have that someday medicine and science will win this one.
