Check your dates - I didn't know Lennon was going to die tommorrow. Not at home and can't you tube at work, but check Zappa/Lennon/Ono for their one show together. Makes me think John was a suicide.

But seriously, RIP to my favorite Beatle by far. The driving force behind the Band (a subject that infuriates Paul to this day) and a man who lived more lives/incarnations than a cat in 40 years on the earth

LOL. Yeah, I think it was 1980. Hard to believe it's been that long.

It was a very sad night. I was at a Spingsteen show at the Spectrum and he came out and told the crowd. I'll never forget it.

I was 8 years old on the day John Lennon was shot and killed. My birthday is December 8, so it was my golden birthday.

Because I was young, it was his death that got me into the beatles.

I wanted to know what the fuss was about. I listened and became hooked.

Everybody wants to say
Somethin special
Everybody wants to be
John Lennon
Everybody wants to be an enemy
Of Tricky Dicky
And everybody wants to marry
Yoko Ono
Cause everybody wants to be John Lennon

I saw Bruce at the Spectrum the following night, December 9.

He opened the show by saying “It’s a hard world that asks you to live with a lot of things that are unbearable. And it’s hard to come out here and play tonight, but there is nothing else to do.” (Okay, I didn’t remember the exact words, but that was a quote I pulled from the Internet and that sounds about right.)

It hits me a lot harder today than it did in 1980, probably because my two kids are so into the Beatles, and their greatness both musically and philosophically.

Funky: Another vivid memory I have is waiting in line for those tickets. Did you wait at the Spectrum the day went on sale? After camping out all night, I remember a small motorcycle gang coming by early in the morning, before the ticket windows opened, and trying to take over the security detail. The lead guy was banging himself in the head with a baseball bat to establish his toughness, and it worked until the police showed up, and he hopped on his bike and took off.

And I remember the cops subsequently walking up and down the line of people waiting, eyeballing us for threatening characters. And then the one person they pulled out of line to frisk was me, probably about the least threatening person there.

I miss John very much. There was only one John Lennon.

Can't believe how long it has been.
