So, I'm in a bar in Philly, on Saturday night. They're playing all kinds of music, the general classic rock tunes . . . hip hop . . . the whole mix.

Then, I hear the classic opening notes . . . and I'm like "NO WAY!!!" Truth be told, I thought it was some rap song I never heard, using the Mt. Jam opening as some kind of hook.

Then another 30 seconds go by. I turn to my boy - a casual ABB fan - and I'm now SUPER STOKED, "Dude, somebody just put on a 40-minute ABB instrumental!!!!!!!!!!"

Well, a good half-hour later, the song is still playing. I'm in heaven, and my buddies are bopping along.

I don't know if it's the best bar song ever, but it sure as hell made my night. Whoever played that tune sure has some good taste . . .

One of life's nice little surprises.

That is cool!!! The last time I listened to MJ was the first in a long while. I think I replayed the last 7 minutes 3 or 4 times.

Nice to know some establishments out there can still bring it!

Went to Marco Island a few times over the course of a few years to watch the Chiefs play the Raiders in Oakland. WTH...Florida seemed like a great place to do that. Always ended up at a place called the Sand Bar...witha 48 oz Porterhouse which was very good.
Their juke box had Eat A Peach on it and 25 cents a song selection. Best quarters I ever spent for Mountain Jam.

This sounds like a TouchTunes jukebox. They can play almost anything. I had a friend who had a similar experience. He was having a running battle with this one guy in a bar over who's tune would get played next. The thing with TouchTunes is for another quarter or more you can have your selection come up next no matter how many songs are in the queue. My buddy kept selecting Mountain Jam, Whipping Post, all the long ABB cuts and then would have them play next.

I wonder if it is Murph's Bar in Fishtown section of Philadelphia. I went there last Friday night and their jukebox is great. I believe it was TouchTunes. They have all of the Gov't Mule albums on it which excitied me. I played Broke Down on The Brazos and Railroad Boy. A couple people asked me who it was which was cool. I think I found myself a new bar to go to.

They have that in the Irish bar a few streets up from the Beacon. It was wall-to-wall "Family music" in there before the shows last March. Just added to the great times had during that visit - singalongapeach!

similar thing happened to me 2 weeks ago, at The Distillery (bar & restaurant) in Rochester. They were playing the same trash they normally do, hip hop and punk and all the "popular" stuff, and then the opening notes of Joyful Noise by the DTB came on. so awesome when that kind of thing happens! i found myself looking around the bar and seeing if anyone was diggin the song.

WannabeDerek- me and my girlfriend have actually had this happen to us as well when we play whippin' post.

I'm a Philly guy too. Upper Darby actually. Any way.....back in the mid 80's to mid 90's,the bar that we hung out in & played softball for had Mt. Jam on the jukebox, along with alot of other good music. We used to play Mt. Jam all the time. It drove the owner nuts & he tried to put a piece of tape over it to try & fool us into thinking it wasn't on there anymore. Needless to say, it didn't work. Just a good funny memory from back then.

Cool story. I was at a bar/restaurant after work one day. Usual stuff, pop music, hip hop, 70/80's stuff, then I heard the first coule notes of Mt Jam.

No juke box, but probably from some badass in the kitchen who like you said, isnt afraid to play a 40 minute instrumental for people who will say things like, "ok, are there lyrics here?" or "what is this music? is this the same song?" or "all I can hear is the drums!" He was totally committed because he played Dark Star next.

Its called getting M-Jay'd, I've been running it for years. My neighborhood bartender won't let me close to the jukebox anymore.

HAHAHAHAH!!!! This thread is very timely.....

Bout a week ago at my local watering hole....had an 'altercation' with some "Barby Doll Disco Queens". The prime 'happy hour' attendees of our spot are normally of a 'classic rock' nature. A close friend had popped 5 buks into the Satellite fed jukebox and some classic cuts were playing. The two 'Barby Dolls' who were unknowingly sitting next to my friends wife began to run their mouths...."Who's playing this sh*t?!!!" "This is crap!".....get some real music on here"! Most of the regulars were bewildered. The bimbos then walked over to the jukebox and filled it with some money. The BAD news is that for an 'extra play'....'your song will play next'. Suddenly we were innundated with this hip-hop disco crap and the gals kept their mouths running as well. Well....the GOOD news is that I TOO can 'trump' their 'disco' if I so choose to do so with another 'extra play'. I figured that MOUNTAIN JAM was a good return on my investment....so I chose it as my 'trump'. As mentioned the familiar opening lines soon came on after the 2nd disco song and the Barby Dolls were furious. The rest of the joint started cheering and the dingbats moved to the far end of the bar and beyoned cussing me out....kept their mouths shut for the rest of the evening...well at least for the 42 minutes of the song.

NOW....normally, I'm not a person to play 'trump' on the jukebox.....to each his own. But if somebody wants to play 'trump' and calls my friends dirty names essentially right to their face while sitting next to his wife....all 'rules' are OFF!!!

Oh yea....played WHippin' Post after Mountain JAM!!!!

I had a similar issue at one of our local dives. They too had one of those internet jukeboxs. Then it was Govt Mule. The long versions off LHFMF's of Spanish Moon, Pigmy Twylight and Afro Blue. Needless to say, there were a lot of looks from the bar area like, who the hell played that??? I would smile and say me damn it with a big smile. From then on, folks would beg me not to play that. Eventually some other folks started liking it and played it. That place burned down a month or so later. Sadly the juke box is gone for good.

Yogi's.....

My thoughts exactly Bluedad! First trip to the Beacon in 1992 went in Yogi's and thought ........OK great place to hang out before shows....... Great Jukebox with ABB tunes - Like minded folks gettin up for the show........file away for futre reference!

Three years later back for another couple of shows and we walk in and Blue Sky from 1rst set is beginning and to this day that's the only Bar in which I've heard that version come so sweetly from the Jukebox! The "Bear" Bar definitely won over my heart that night! Always made the trek a block north to enjoy the scene @ Yogi's until this spring when sadly Yogi's was no more! RIP Yogi's & the Beacon!
