I am.

The bar I work at is open all day and night and I'm stuck managing.

Anybody else working this day? If so, what do you do?

No, I can't do that.

I work at a high volume place and they need me that day. Fortunately, I am being very well compensated. Still, a day of football and turkey does sound good.

Are you in Georgia?

I used to hang out at this place called Toes Tavern in Pasadena. I stopped in the day after Thanksgiving and the bartender told me he opened Thanksgiving afternoon around 4. Ended up doing some decent business and made about $150 in tips.

There have been times on Thanksgiving and other holidays I wished there was another place to go hang out for awhile.

Why do you ask?

And that's why we're open, in addition to it being profitable. There is literally no other place around that's open to go and hang out, and not everybody has a family--you know? There are a lot of people here on that day who don't have folks to spend holidays with. The money is more than good for me. I'm not complaining. Still, it isn't the same as being at home.

Working the day tour on Thanksgiving, sending firetruck's to oven fires and ambulance's to the family football games.

Some of your postings (your writing style) reminded me of someone from Georgia.

Really?

No hon, I'm a born and raised Motown gal!

I've stopped at a few waffle houses in Georgia and spent a summer on Jekyll Island once but that's it.

I know the topic is about working for money but I've got a 20 lb turkey and stuffing to cook, chicken and dressing to make, mashed potatoes, two kinds of sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, layer salad, deviled eggs, home cooked rolls, pecan pie and pumpkin pies to bake, a trip to Moms for a meal with her and my brothers, back here for Thanksgiving dinner with the local family and then the second wave of family in the next afternoon from out of town for another round of eating and cleaning up.

I'm beginning to think I need a job.

Working, but Thanksgiving in Canada is the second Monday in October...always envious of you scheming Yanks. Have Thanksgiving on a Thursday and take Friday as a "not going to be doing anything productive anyway" day off. Enjoy ! Thanks giving is a much much bigger deal in the US as far as holidays go.

Nope - lucked out and am off call this week so not working Thursday. But I am working Friday (so light on the wine on turkey day ) and I'm planning on spending some kitchen time Wednesday night and Thursday morning preparing some stuff to take along to the Thanksgiving dinner I'm attending.

Sorry, we live in Alabama.....but I'm also fixing baked pineapple along with everything else if that makes the long drive more tempting.

Although I'm now retired I worked every Thanksgiving for about 20 yrs.in the grocery biz. We started out being closed for my first 15 yrs but started opening from 6am till noon. It wasn't too long until it was 2pm and then 4pm. Now most stores are open regular hrs.I didn't mind too much as I useally had an early shift and got off in plenty of time for dinner and recieved tripple time holiday pay.
But the comment that always made me laugh was when customers said it was so awful that I had to work on the holiday. The only reason the store was open was because they were shopping and it was profitable for them.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone

This is one of the first years that I am NOT working on Thanksgiving. Love that restaurant biz, but am glad to have a holiday off for once. Tips are usually better on holidays though.

Enjoy your day and at least eat some turkey.
